Hey guys

My contract is due for an upgrade and I am trying to choose between these two phones (iPhone 5c and S4 mini).

Which phone is better and why?

Are apple apps more expensive than Android apps?

Please let me know what you guys think.

Thanks

good suggestion....

I would go for z1 compact if it's in your budget, it's the best compact phone by a huge margin right now but as for eco system don't listen to fan boys ios and android are very similar and both have ample user friendliness and apps, features etc for everyone besides the nerdiest of users. The only mission for me was my downloaded movies on ios requires you to jump through many loop holes but I doubt that would be a deal breaker as watching movies on those sized phone screens is not exactly ideal or comfortable anyway.

My suggestion in order from best to worst:

1: Sony z1 compact
2:HTC one mini and iphone 5c
3.s4 mini

The iphone 5c is basically just a plastic iphone 5 so it's last year's proper flagship if you don't mind the plastic then it's an excellent all round phone, the s4 mini however is a sheep with a wolf's name and is actually just a midrange phone with rubbish screen resolution compared to the other 3 here.

I didn't like the build quality of the 5C when I played with it... Rather try see if you can get a 5 (TM still has them). S4 Mini is a good phone and value for money is quite good. Plastic isn't great but overall a nice phone. Have a look at the Huawei P6 as well, best value for money at the moment IMO and build quality is really good!

The best way to choose would be for you to spend some time playing with both as the choice is really more about the operating system: Apple's iOS or Google's Android.
As to software / applications; both stores have tons of apps, and the price is usually the same or very similar.
Apple does have some advantage being chosen as a first release platform for many apps, for more consistent operating system upgrades and a very easy to learn user interface.

Android on the other side is more flexible when it comes to things like file access, user interface (UI) customization, etc. Between device vendors you will also find that the UI is quite different both in operation and look. Most of the challenges can however be overcome if you're technically capable.

As to the actual device choice; all the major vendors produce reasonably high quality devices; however Apple and Samsung tend to lead the race in terms of overall device sales, but you certainly won't be disappointed by devices from for example: HTC, Sony, ...
Good luck.

Thanks guys. I think I have decided on android. I may get a Z1 for myself and a S4 Mini for the wife.

The new deals are coming out tomorrow so I'll have a look and decide.

Z1 Compact > 5c > HTC One Mini > S4 Mini.

5c is a very capable, well-made phone so I wouldn't dismiss it that quickly.

Definitely don't look at the S4 mini in the same class as the 5C as it's actually a midrange phone and it's not even a decent one at that.

just a small point. I have stated why I feel compact phones are a bad idea many times. I have also said why I feel the 5c is a waste of time many times on this forum, but I am an android fanboy so that is expected.

you asked about app prices, and 2 people in my office have iOs devices, poor sods, and on average all the apps I use that they have as well I get for free and they pay for. sure there are free apps on both. but in 90% of the cases where I find some amazing new game or some useful app, and the Iphone guys have a look for it, it will cost them money. the big difference between the two is:
on android you can survive quite well without ever adding your credit card details to the play store. in 4 years of android powered devices my other half has never ever added credit card details, I have but that was for a hack I found. apps are free. if they are not free, you go find the free version on the web.

or you cheat like I do from time to time. I have a rooted s4 with a titanium backup. so I pay for an app, install it. make a backup of the app and uninstall it (within 15 minutes of paying for it) then I get a refund. then I restore the backup and I have the app and the money.

I also have to say I have done this twice, both of those apps I decided to pay for the app within two days of downloading it.

just one last thing, the S4 mini is not good. don't do it, HTC one mini, Z1 Compact. or just get a freaking flagship. I have seen this happen too often, move from a BB get a s4 mini because "the S4 is just too big for my hands" two weeks later after using it "I wish I took the s4 so my keyboard was bigger"

S4 mini is R249 and Z1 Compact is R369.

S4 is R379.

Please also look at price when making suggestions.

I'm looking for one phone around R250 and one around R400.

Like I said for now my eyes are on the S4 mini and Z1.

New contract deals are coming out tomorrow, so I'm looking to get the new phones by this weekend.

So you're looking for two phones??

for the wife:

Sony Xperia V at R229 p/m

And for you:

Xperia Z1 Compact at R369 p/m

Friend had the Xperia V... He had a few issues with it and after 6 months Vodacom swapped it for a brand new S4 Mini at no charge

For what it's worth, shop around, get booklets with all offers, and look at specs. The S4 mini and iPhone 5c are terrible Imo, and the 5c slightly less than the 5s on certain packages. Forget about brands, change the mindset that only the best phones are from Samsung and Apple. Have a look at the Huawei P6, HTC one and one mini.. Alcatel will release a 5" quad core phone for under R2000 soon. there are loads of options in the R200 to R400 range, and some of the older handsets with still decent specs can be had for not much.
