Hi Guys,

I just got my shiny new Iphone 5s which was an upgrade from a 4. One issue I have is that there seems to be no way to use my phone on a standard GSM network. LTE/3G speeds have been great, however it really sucks the life out of the battery which becomes worse inside my office block. I have WIFI at home and the office, so LTE/3G in these places are of no benefit to me.

Is there any way I can the phone to use a non 3G/LTE band?

i had a lot of issues with data connection on my 5s.

Firstly it dropped signal everytime I left a LTE area and I had to switch it off and on to get signal again. Eventually someone at the Vodacom data store told me I should switch the LTE off.

Secondly I often only get Edge whilst my ipad 2 and wife's Galaxy S4 (lying next to it) gets 3g

i hate the 5s

Surely some of that hate should be directed at Vodacom for selling you an LTE phone when their network wasn't ready for LTE?

Could you elaborate, please? It can be technical, no problem.

Miss much?

Surely for a suspected faulty device, you'd expect the Vodacom representative to advise him to take it in for repairs / exchange and not to switch off LTE?

Not quite so sure. It could be problem with buggy device, or with current LTE implementation. I read in many places that not only Vodacom has problems with LTE and above problem is quite common. I also remember from some QUALCOM presentation that LTE is not seamlesly integrated with 3G. Not the same as 3G was with 2G.
Expect more problems, as LTE specification was created in rush. LTE was used in all over the world as a tool to receive new bands allocation from Government.

Then surely would be silly for the support guy to ask him to switch off LTE, especially when as he explained it was working in other areas; he mentioned transitioning problems, but for me that sounds a lot more like network issues than device ones.

Either case the VC guy should surely have steered him to the closest store or service centre? Hence I said some of the anger should rightfully land at VC's door.

Not sure where you get your facts, as I've said before you'll garner far more credibility if you quote a few references -- do you mind sharing a few sources that substantiate your statements?

What you say would if vodacom rep knows well that Apple has no cure as speaking? They will certainly not send customer to the service centre, but advice workaround.

I said that problem is not neccessary at Vodacom, it could be buggy handset or general problem with LTE. Go Google search, you will see.

Again I'm struggling with your grammar; honestly what is your home language?

I can Google any problem you like; so a Google search certainly doesn't prove anything. Either share your references (which we can discuss), or unfortunately the discussion has to end here.

@[)roi(] I looked back and realised that discussion should end. You are responding to a distraction message, then you continue with silly bickering. Do you have any solution to the subject?

Simple (no different for any product), Remember it's too easy to write off any product as crap so:
1. take the product back if it's suspected faulty,
2. insist on a full refund if their network's not up to scratch,
3. don't accept any less than what they sold you,
4. escalate your issue up the chain, until you find someone who has the authority to fix your problem.
5. Keep a detailed email record -- try to avoid voice calls, as these can't easily be shared. Email is always the best bet.

@[)roi(]: You keep derailing this thread. OP don't say anything about network performance. Question is how to disable LTE/3G on iPhone 5s and use EDGE only.

You can't.. Basically it has two modes since introduction of LTE in iPhone 5, ie
normal - 2G+, 3G+
LTE mode - LTE

So u can't force 2G+ only to make the battery last long

Please enlighten me where I use the phrase "network performance"

Also I'm sure the OP can respond to my post, they certainly don't need you as a proxy.

Ps. Congrats at least this post is understandable, not like the typical grammar soup you often vomit in these forums.

@crazy_cat, for comparison: how long does your battery last + what does your typical day to day activity comprise of?

Maybe I should explain a difference between above and "network wasn't ready for LTE". Just show relevance of this question and I will take on this issue.

Apparently I'm wasting my time as your comprehension of this technology seems to be hampered somewhat by retentiveness in your lower extremities.

But nevertheless I'll try: if the LTE network is unstable, then it's quite probably that the iPhone could be spending quite a bit of time trying to negotiate connections, and this signal negotiation process is probably one of the most energy taxing operations on the device, hence it's often advised to turn off LTE to conserve battery (most appropriate when LTE signal is proven to be a problem)

Apparently it is about relevance to the subject and compliance to the forum rules, not technology. Are you able to figure it out?

Your retentiveness or staying on topic?

I did read up about the LTE issue when I had an iPhone 5... I would often get stuck on no service until I restarted the phone. I felt the iOS 7 mad a big difference to my phone though. Google search showed AT&T users with the same issue so I guess its an iPhone issue
