iPhone 8 & iPhone X Thread

I disagree! They very much about the aesthetic, but their interpretation and no one else's.

They spent a lot of time developing their icons and icons continue to evolve with new versions of iOS. I also consider all the animations baked into iOS unnecessary eye candy. How about an option to switch those off? And I don't mean reduced motion.

Sure they are about the aesthetic but more so having it within their control.

When you remove control you remove the aesthetic.

Just messed around with the iPhone X now (some guy has one here at the conference and asked if I could see it :) ) - it really is amazing. Going back to my iPhone 7 Plus it feels so outdated and "old". That screen is something else too, so crisp and sharp and everything just works.

FaceID is really fast too and I got use to the gestures within 2 minutes as it just feels natural.

Now to wait too see the cost and availability come 24th November.

very nice phone, played around with my colleagues at work, Dont know much about iOS but its a beautiful screen, great size, fast and responsive.. face id was a bit meh though , it didnt work if he held it off center to his face and it takes longer to open than my s7e with fingerprint reader, just used to it i guess and if you own this, you will get used to faceid too. He did say he was in a rush this morning and set up faceid in like 10 seconds , didn't rotate his head properly so it probably needs resetting like a dodgy finger print scan.

so far colour me impressed, apple eventually made a phone worth moving over for.

Just bear in mind there is a vast different between the more secure FaceID that requires eye contact and the one that doesn’t.

This affects speed or more directly how it is used.

Off centre would struggle if it was enabled as it specifically requires you to look at it directly.

Wonder how the speed of the technology will increase.

Would be nice if one can store more than one face, but I guess we'll only see multiple faces in the X s model.

I assume our local banking apps that used finger print login will also be updated to support face ID for login?

Correct. Apple said it would be a seamless change. If an App supports TouchID it will be a negligible change to support FaceID.

I can confirm that the FNB app works perfectly with FaceID. Apps that already use TouchID automatically work with FaceID.

That's good to know. Wondered about exactly this

Every app that I have that supports TouchID is working perfectly with FaceID. When you are in an app there is no option to enable FaceID only TouchID but when you enable TouchID you get a popup asking if you want to enable FaceID.

It’s so hot today and my hands and fingers are dripping with sweat. I’m so happy I don’t have to worry about TouchID failing anymore.

Spy shots of Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s show an iPhone X-style cutout

Et tu, Xiaomi? There isn’t much context to these photos but they allegedly show the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s – a reworked version of the bezel-less phone that now features an iPhone X-style cutout on top.

This moves the selfie camera to a more natural position and should help reduce the bottom bezel, though that is not clearly visible in these shots.

The “horns” around the cutout are wider, leaving more room for icons in the status bar compared to the iPhone. Still, if the Essential Phone is any indication, Android apps don’t play well with such cutouts (developers explicitly need to support it, otherwise the top of the screen is a dead area).

What do you think? Will such a redesign by Xiaomi prove popular or do you like the classic Mix design better?

Squaretrade: iPhone X is the most breakable iPhone ever

Despite Apple’s claims that the iPhone X is built with glass among the most durable ever used in mobile devices, numerous drop tests have confirmed that glass, as it has always had a habit of doing, still breaks relatively easily. In a recent informational video/advertisement, Squaretrade claims that the iPhone X is the most breakable phone Apple has ever produced.

The tests

It is important to note that Squaretrade is a company within the Allstate family that offers protection plans on electronic devices and appliances. The recently released video cites results from a variety of drop tests conducted by testers at Squaretrade.

The tests consisted of a 6 foot side drop test, 6 foot face down drop test, a 6 foot back down drop test, and a 60 second tumble test. As you can see below, the results of these various drop tests are not encouraging.

Well deserved skepticism, but be conscientious

You may be thinking that a 6 foot drop is a higher drop than the typical accidental drop, and you would be correct in your skepticism. The typical pocket or chest height drop will be quite shorter than 6 feet for most iPhone X users, and this is definitely something to consider.

Squaretrade also notes significantly higher repair costs compared to past iPhone due to a comparatively more complex internal design and build. This fact combined with the results of the previously mentioned drop tests leads Squarespace to make the following statement:

The most breakable, highest-priced, most expensive to repair iPhone, ever.
This is definitely a statement worth considering, but you may have a right to be skeptical based on Squaretrade’s intentions. As previously mentioned, Squaretrade’s business is selling protection plans for devices such as the iPhone X. You would be correct in believing it would benefit them for you to believe the newest iPhone is very fragile. This is definitely something to consider.

I would, however, suggest that regardless of what you believe Squaretrade’s motives are you consider the increased fragility of a glass-backed iPhone compared to an aluminum-backed iPhone. I would strongly advise you to consider your past history with your devices while carefully considering whether or not to protect your pricey iPhone investment with either a case or a protection plan.

Anyone who thinks that glass doesn’t break when dropping or smashing with a hammer is stupid.
