iPhone and its GPS

I disagree - the 3rd party applications are what makes a product successful - it shows that the OEM has developed a strong and useful SDK.

That is a very valid point. Having a platform for developers to work on is very important for gaining market share. However this goes hand in hand with having a complete package out of the box. Those two factors, along with being open source, is what placed Symbian at the top : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartphone#Operating_systems

I do not get personal and start throwing around insults to others in online forums, thats just a little bit below my level.

LOL...don't try to pull the wool over my eyes - ive seen your posts man. just wanted to know why a guy who hates something so much spends so much time talking about it. kinda weird man...

I have do desire to pull anything over you. Love and hate are two very strong emotions - so you may find that people not only talk about the things they love but also about the things they hate. I hate apple for many reasons but mainly for their (and their users) attitude.

With the iPhone they did two things that give me an endless source for writing about 1)They made a piece of crap (it really is very incomplete out of the box) and 2)It got over hyped. That gives me so much to talk about and subtly inform people about how l4m3 the iPhone is.

yeah...good luck with that.
what's your next venture?

Whatever comes after iPhone 3G

I thought you talk about the Iphone and iPhone 3G so much because you don't like what it offers but here you are stating that whatever comes after it you will hate too.

This leads me to believe that you hate Apple in general. Even if the next thing from apple is amazing you will still look for flaws.

How much is Microsoft paying you?

From what I have read the new iPhone has A-GPS (Assisted GPS). While assisted GPS is usually used to assist (hence the name) a real GPS receiver in terms of startup time it seems the iPhone is using A-GPS alone as its sole method of determining position.

My question is - how accurate is the iPhone as GPS when it relies on cell towers and wifi hotspots for its position? Can you for example use it to do Geocaching or other things that involve pin pointing things to within a meter? I currently use a Nokia N82 (GPS receiver with A-GPS) that has Garmin Mobile XT installed on it and this is a very accurate solution.

I have seen Google Mobile Maps with its "My Location" feature running on non-GPS smartphones (N73 / E65) but this typically gives your position within anything from 2km to a few 100m. Is the A-GPS found in the iPhone also on this level of accuracy ?

Its a common misconception that A-GPS uses cell id to "triangulate" position. This is not the case. The "A" or assist is actually your phone connecting to an assist server and dumping the satellite data onto that server, who computes the data and sends the position back to the phone, along with satellite information (orbit, altitude etc) of the satellites you are connected to. You can turn off assist but it will take much longer to get a fix because your phone will have to do all the calculations itself. Once it has found more satellites and the calculation becomes easier it will be able to drop the assist.

I am not paid by Microsoft, I have my beefs with them as well since I am a .NET developer. But they have learned a few lessons in being more open with their platforms and some of their products.

I am also not being paid by Nokia, but I appreciate them for the quality of their products and getting most of it right out of the box. They also made Symbian open and my dream is to one day see low power desktop and laptop systems running on ultra efficient ARM architecture and integrating with everything.

Apple is just too closed/proprietary. Their whole attitude with making their own hardware and software and not allowing other people to make it is monopolistic. They are too smug with themselves, in the days they ran on motorola CPUs they portrayed IBM as the big evil. Then they went over to IBM PowerPC CPUs and Intel was was inefficient bad ass. Now they are running on Intel CPUs. What gives ?

In my humble point of view they are monopolists and morons making simple (yet excellent, I must admit) solutions for users that want something simple and idiot proof. The day I will start liking Apple is when their OS is just another option for normal computers (like Windows or Linux) and when they stop thinking they are better than everyone else and start pricing their stuff more competitively.

But, thats just me and my views - if you do not like it feel free to say so - I can tolerate others and their views.

Well.. could you kindly keep your views as such... and not try post your opinion as fact without even experience with the product to back it up with.

Oh, and do tell how a company that has at MOST 10% of the PC market can be monopolistic?

How do you know I have not experienced Apple products ? I did say that I admit they are excellent.

Apple is monopolistic when it comes to their market. The PC market is an open one where many vendors operate on both the software and hardware front. Unfortunately that is not entirely the case with Apple. Plus, the things they have done in the past is just plain arrogant.

If you appeal to the Apple way of doing things then by all means enjoy it and the products they have. I am sure you couldn't careless about what others think because "you are using the best".

It's just a matter of time before a 3rd party GPS application is available for the iPhone.

No its more like, it only a matter of time until South Africa gets up to speed with map detail on google.
I really dont see a GPS software house challenging google and out doing them.

For now, the Likes of handymap and garmin will offer more. The bootom line here is the fact that google maps are web based apps, this means that a monster server is doing the work and not the processor in your hand held device.

Using the first generation iphone you can easily travel in Europe and the states without having to purchase maps for the specific region.

The server-based approach is a very smart one - with Nokia Maps, if you do not have the maps loaded onto your phone it will also get it over the internet. Also, if you enable the sat view it will get the imagery over the internet and overlay that onto the maps (google style).

The problem with this is that if you are in remote areas where their is no coverage and your device does not have internal maps data then you are lost without it :p

i havent really used the nokia maps etc ... i struggle to use anything without a touch screen ... anyway the moral of my story, A real man doesn't need directions ( so make sure you have a Plan B )

He can't afford one. Hence negging it so much.

He is also a cocky dimwit who thinks he knows everything.

No point in arguing with this moron.

He wants everybody to hear his opinion and then force it down their throats.

Clearly his mother didn't give him enough attention so now he is seeking for it here.

(WATCH THIS SPACE FOR HIS SMARTASS COMEBACK)

Dude, chill off on the insults.
If you can't argue fact, then why resort to personal attacks?
If its not fact - then disprove it or bring your point across.
We all know that you're the "Apple Guy" and that you've been into it for years and love them, but that in know way grants you any rights to site personal attacks.
Grow up or simply ignore.

Thanks for that very informative post.
Non technical and easy for me to understand :)

Have a look around in the iPhone tips and tricks thread or just ask Freeman or that fxit guy - you'll be surprised how many fixes and tricks you need to apply on the iPhone to get it on the same level as, say, an out of the box Nokia N82.

Your iPhone infatuation is really becoming old now... most of the tricks in that thread won't work and are not needed anymore.

I recommend you fap once over the iPhone and get this out your system.

So if I understand correctly, there will soon be a Garmin version for the iPhone3G?

Awesome.

Garmin have not indicated that they would(nuvifone meant to rival the iphone anyway) but it's still too early to say.
