Hello all,

I am currently a blackberry user and seriously contemplating coming over to the iPhone side. I just have a few questions, before I make my final decision.

1 - if I connect to my adsl via my wireless router will I be able to do all the things things that I would do via 3G like installing apps on my phone, browsing etc. I know this might sound like a stupid question, but I just don't want any nasty surprises not having paid for data in a while.

2 - iphone and linux, does it match - not really high on my list at the moment, but if someone knows it would be appretiated.

3 - how data intensive is the iphone if I update all my software etc through my wireless router. I am just worrying about software that acces the net without me actively deciding to use the bet.

4 - is it possible to set the phone to only update via wireless etc

If I can only update via my wireless router then that would make my BIS absolete and I would be quite happy to jump ship.

Thanks

The iPhone always checks for a wifi connection first (if wifi is enabled). Yes, it will use wifi as a substitute for 3G for all normal data usage. It switches to 3G where there is no valid wifi.
Not sure about iPhone and linux.
If you do everything through your wifi, then the phone is not data intensive. The only things that use data are mail (if you set it to check every 5 mins), calendar if you're syncing, and maybe specific apps that need data to run, e.g. maps, weather apps, etc.. These generally use data when you use it ... the phone doesn't do anything on its own in the quiet unless you enabled it. I'm always near a wifi, and my 3G data use on my iPhone 3G is usually under 100 MB per month. I use maps and mail when I am out of the office.
You can't update the phone iOS wirelessly or through 3G. It has to be done via a physical USB connection to a PC/Mac running iTunes. The PC/Mac maybe connected to the internet in any manner. Apps may be downloaded wirelessly, i.e. through wifi or 3G.

I used my blackberry for all my internet usage because I didn't have a telkom line. I think that with my adsl now, I will mainly use my phone as a phone and the odd picture or video. I don't really need all the fancy stuff, but I would really like a phone that can capture hd video and that just leaves me with the galaxy the wave and the iphone altough I would have overlooked it for the torch because of the bis. With the wireless updaing etc, the torch really loses its power because I effectively don't need bis anymore. The iphone comes bundled with data for the odd facebook and twitter on the anytime 200 for about R40 more than the desire and R60 more than the galaxy s, so it is just fine for me.

1. If your wireless and 3g is turned on... iphone will take preference on wireless (adsl).. if it cant connect/no signal on that 1... it will switch to 3G/edge/gprs or whatever is available
2. never really researched it/tried it out.. try some unix forums. if there is a linux itunes... then yes ;)
3. quite hefty... you looking around 200 to 300mb's per iphone software update... thats excluding the continuous itunes/quicktime releases they do... You would probably look around 500 to 750MB per month...
4. yes, just switch off 3G when you around wireless/adsl ;) Sounds like a mission, but i do it (just incase it starts grasping at my 3g data... it's exactly 4 touches on your iphone ;)

Good luck

Thanks for all the replies. I am not too worried about the data if it goes through my telkom line.

All the itunes I download I can share across my pc and iphone? That would be great. After varsity I decided to be all legal etc.

500 to 750MB per month? that's not true....

He is probably talking about all his data. I got more than 4gigs once on my blackberry when I downloaded movies comparing different phones. At the moment I am still quite data intensive with my blackberry, but with my line I don't need to be.

I think he is reffering to the quicktime, itunes, updates as well if you are running Mac OS... Not just the general iOS updates.....

But thats all once off, mostly. Maybe then 100mg every 3 or 4 months. Never per month.

Yes

As already mentioned you can disable 3G data connections altogether. If you have a jailbroken iPhone with SBSettings installed it's a swipe and 2 key presses and done...

Your installed apps can be downloaded and installed via a wireless connection to the phone. I don't believe the phones firmware can be updated OTA, that requires iTunes and a desktop/laptop. Syncing email as mentioned earlier can be done wirelessly and via 3G or not, user defined.

Personally I refuse to use data at the 3G rates, so do very little via the 3G networks. At home and at work I make use of the wireless networks available and my 3GS works impeccably.

It is without a doubt the most efficient cell phone I've ever owned and that includes the HTC Desire..
