The use of the iPhone online has accelerated to where it's now outranking Symbian in terms of sheer traffic, AdMob's March 2009 metrics report shows. Tracking access worldwide based on ad requests, the firm says OS X iPhone grew to represent 38 percent of smartphone traffic and just slightly edged out all Symbian phones, which have fallen to 37 percent. Both are sharp changes from February, when Symbian held a comfortable lead at 43 percent while the iPhone had just crossed the 33 percent mark.

Interesting stuff, alot of people state the reason being the IPhone coming out with a proper browser by default [Safari] , where as with Symbian you generally don't -really- get a great browsing experience and often people end up having to download Opera Mini or simply not browsing at all .

Also there's the bit about unlimited data plans being offered on iphones [in the US] which is not available on the Symbian phones...

and more local stats:
Nearly all top devices in India, Indonesia and the Philippines are from Nokia; non-Apple devices in the UK are split between Nokia and Sony Ericsson, while South Africa is led by Samsung's handsets.

Interesting, i would've thought Nokia rules here...but guess i'm mistaken ;)

Does anyone here have actual market share stats for SA for the different handset brands?

I'm not surprised that Samsung leads the way here, but is it because people actually prefer Samsung, or because of the special deals that more often than not offers one or two "free" Samsung phones with a juicy shopping voucher, mini hi-fi or fridge included? :D SA seems to be the dumping ground for redundant global Samsung stock.

Are we talking about total number of handsets or amount of WEB traffic per device?

iPhone is not doing badly locally in terms of WEB traffic.

This article should be about web traffic per device ... and I cannot believe Samsung leads in that department. That Samsung leads in handset sales and sms traffic I can believe.

That Vodacom includes 250 MB of "free" data helps in this dept I'm sure. Users will make sure the 250 MB is used every month. I cannot see myself ever using so much data on my E90, unless used as modem connected to a PC/laptop.

I'm not so sure the 250M bundle makes a big difference. Rather I suspect the ease of use of the iPhone leads to more browsing and mailing.

I ran a usage report recently and did not see Samsung at (or near) the top......

Isn't it about time for leaks to appear about the next iPhone? How should it be different from the current one?
