iphone factory reset asking for apple id

hey guys i got an iphone from a friend who got it from a friend that sells phones, now when i took it from my friend, he did a factory reset and now it askes for an apple id and when we try his it dont work.

even when we go onto icloud online to see devices it is not listed there. its gonna be impossible to contact the origional guy and get his details or ask him to delink it.

What can i do?

its my first iphone so have no clue why and whats the reson for this hassle

It is an anti-theft measure. The person that wipes the phone did not remove the lock. Without that AppleID, nothing can be done.
You have to get hold of that person that set the activation lock

next time before taking on any secondhand iThing, have a factory reset done on it, and if it asks for an apple ID, leave it if it cannot be unlocked.

Yep, you are in trouble.

Presumably its iOS7?

With iOS6 there is a way to dodge the activation lock (Connect to Itunes and do a reset) but that loophole got closed with iOS7

If the previous owner setup Activation Lock then you need
- his iCloud Id and password OR
- He needs to delink the phone on his iCloud from wherever he is

You can insert a SIM and use the phone (assuming there is no passcode)
But no downloading apps. Not much you can do

lol, i cant even get in the phone because when i swicth it on and do a setup that what it asks me for. the guy i got it from says he changed the apple id to his but it does not work or show up on his icloud. last resort is to call apple and hope they sort it out

They won't be able to. It is an anti-theft feature. There is no way around it

Nope. It has been designed so you can't get around it. It makes stolen iPhones useless

You cant downgrade without turning Activation Lock off

I dont think Apple would help either.
How do they know it isnt stolen?
You don't even know for sure it isnt stolen

If everybody turned on Activation Lock the thieves would stop stealing iPhones eventually

I'm surprised that no one has questioned whether this device is actually stolen? Seeing as the previous owner mysteriously vanished...

I've had iPhones that I didn't report as stolen. Sometimes it is just a mission to go through that

There is an international market in stolen premium phones.
Stolen phones can get moved to other countries where network blocks dont apply
Even in SA they dont block properly across networks.

You can try Apple... but I doubt they will help.

They will say. Contact the person you bought it from and have him unlock it or get your money back.
