Apple’s iPhone has finally hit the shelves but already hackers have discovered an alternative use for this gadget – free Wi-Fi.

I need this explained in a bit more clear details, so far what im hearing I would've expected... WiFi doesn't rely on a simcard to work?

Nope most phones with wifi can work on offline mode or flight mode, wifi works whether you have a sim in it or not, like GPS on the E90 or N95.

Yeah, so how exactly is this guy getting the free Wi-Fi? hehe I must be a real idiot not to figure this out.

That was my above statement, Wi-Fi doesnt require a simcard.. so why he is so on about free wi-fi?

i'm also missing something. Where is he getting the Wi-Fi ? Surely not from a cellphone tower?.

We all know restaurants/airports with hot-spots tend to provide free/cheap Wi-Fi anyway, but you have to actually go there.

In short: This is like saying "I can get free BLUETOOTH!!! whoopeee" .......huh?

The WiFi means you can do Mail and Safari without a phone connection.”

Well that's what WIFI >>IS<< for all devices??...*boggle* I don't need a phone connection on my laptop either and i can do mail and safari too... ;)

Or was Apple idiotic enough to lock the phone to a network and force you to have a phone connection to do anything? I know some phones don't even want to turn on without a simcard, would be stupid for Apple to require that on a glorified-MP3 player though....

That would be the iPod - this is the iPhone being discussed. ;)

AFAIK that requirement was part of the arrangement with ATT.

Okay, I get it now. However I can buy a 4GB memory card for my N95... 6GB and 8GB coming soon....

So I can also have free WiFi??? lol... nah, dont fall for the free wifi thing if you ask me :)

Shame is the phone that bad that the best thing he could come up with was free wifi? lol shame man.

Well they tried to include a root-kit but Sony had already called dibs on that.

This is the issue:

ATT has a monopoly on the IPHONE, and since being released on the week-end there have been a lot of complaints that the activation of the phone/sim is taking soo long. Some posts have said up to 48 hrs. Without the phone activated, you can not use the Iphone, even for minor stuff.

You cannot even connect to ITUNES!! All this guy is saying is he seems to have figured out how to use the phone, before he got his activation.

Yes, you buy the phone for $499 and then you still need to sign a 24-month At&T contract just to activate it.

This crack allows you to activate it for free!

You can't make calls on it yet, but I'm sure they'll get that working too.

Do you guys get it now, you save an odd $49 x 24 months!

Apple creaming profits on iPhone

and....."Apple shares were up $5.91 or 4.9 per cent to $US127.17 on Nasdaq. Shares of AT&T were down 35 cents at $US41.50 on the New York Stock Exchange."

Apple have sold over 600K of these phones in a few days. most stores have run out of stock! Sure this is going to fail...?

Step 1: Buy the iPhone and sign the 2 year contract.
Step 2: Hack the iPhone.
Step 3: Cancel contract with AT&T within two days. No cancelation charges, and they even refund your activation charge.

You now have a nice iPod with WiFi, maps, calendar, email, etc.

Step 4: (soon) Hack iPhone again, to put any SIM card of your choice in.

Now you have all of the iPhone's abilities minus visual voice mail, without being on crappy AT&T.
