Hi guys

Im pretty sure this has been covered before, but what gives with Telkom and its portable hotspot and an iphone?

It wont allow me to share my internet connection, so im wondering if this is a Telkom issue or an iphone issue.

Any advice on this?

IIRC the personal hotspot on iOS is "provisioned" by the network operator to prevent people on unlimited data abusing it (last I was in the US was a few years ago so this may of changed)

Taking a wild guess here but are you using it on the Telkom integrated SIM? To rule out the phone, try another standard SIM. If it works, you know Telkom blocked hotspots.

Yeh integrated sim, other sims are fine and the hotspot works. I cant see why TI would block me from using my data as a hotspot, when its no problem on my Android devices

Telkom doesn't prevent me from tethering via my iphone.

EDIT: Have you checked Settings>Mobile Data>Personal Hotspot?

are you on the integrated SIM?
Probably not...

What's odd, and I've noticed this happen just now is that the Settings>Personal Hotspot menu comes and goes while the Settings>Mobile Data>Personal Hotspot menu remains.

Found this.. seems hotspot feature can be disabled on iphone by network provider

2. Assure you are on a compatible data plan with your carrier

In order to use Instant Hotspot, you'll need to be using a data plan with your carrier that supports tethering, since that's essentially what Instant Hotspot is. In order to do this, check with your carrier to make sure that you're on a plan that allows tethering. If you aren't, you'll need to change your plan before being able to use the feature.

Carriers can turn off the Hotspot on ALL operating systems, Android included.

Its done, as Waylander pointed out, to prevent abuse of unlimited networks or because the provider charges a "premium" rate for shared connections. Yes, I know its dodge but thats how networks tried to monetize data more, under the assumption that an "unlimited" data user would use approximately x% on their phone only. Once tethered that number can increase exponentially.

Having said that, I can hotspot Telkom sims. But I dont have the integrated SIM, it could be different there.
Finally, it could just be a reboot it needed. And before the Android fanboys start getting excited, my S7 often needed reboots to fix a dead hotspot. Until the phone finally got wet and died (yes, the water resistant phone). And I switched to an Iphone 7 :)

I had an issue and then logged into telkoms user portal and changed a setting about out of bundle data disconnection. Then tethered. Then it worked. Then I reverted that setting and it still works
