Hi all, I'm planning to get an iPhone 6S when they're available, and I'm looking at insurance offers. I'm with Vodacom, and insured with Outsurance so I looked at those two, and someone suggested getting my upgrade through the iStore. Estimates are based on ~R13k cash price for a 64GB 6S.

  • Vodacom is R245/month (so R5880 over the 24 months). Excess is the max of 10% claim cost or R300, so replacement would be R1300. It then goes up per claim. Looks like unlimited claims.
  • Outsurance is R160/month (so R3840 over 24 months) with an excess of R650. I assume unlimited claims here as well, but premium will go up with repeated claim.
  • iStore is R1300 once off, plus R1000 on actual claim. Only one replacement is allowed (these are new rules and prices as of 15 October).

So on single replacement iStore wins with a total of R2300 total for replacement. But that single replacement is a big limitation. I assume you can then get a new package for the replacement phone though. For repeated claims, Outsurance is the clear winner.

So can anyone give any advice based on past experience with any of these options? Any gotchas they don't mention or particularly long waits for replacement, etc? If not.. well at least these options are here for anyone else who wants to know about them :)

Get a quote from Edgars as well.

Why not include it in your home insurance?

Mines worked out to +/-R35 for R10 000 10% Excess Santam.

Just add it to your house insurance. Will be far cheaper.

My home insurance is through Outsurance, they're the second quote. I wonder if Santam will insure just the phone (I doubt it)..

As far as I am aware iStore only covers damaged claims. If it gets stolen they will not replace it nor can you change your package.

iStore does not cover theft and is damage cover! so in no way comparable.

For me, I use Discovery. Their Mobile Computing/Device Insurance effectively works out to about 0.9-1% of the insured value.. i.e. 13k device means +/-R130 if you have household with them. I found other places to be a lot more expensive if purchased unbundled.

I would simply look after it better (theft) and put the money towards repairing any damage should you drop it or some such.

My iPhone 6 Plus started giving some hassles before the first year was over, and while I was still contemplating on taking it in and hoping for a warranty replacement, I dropped it in the ocean (freak wave on the rocks, I really shouldn't have had it on the beach, but I was working). That kinda made my decision easier, and I am just so glad that I have insurance with Outsurance! Even though I work from home and spend 99.9% in my home office, they insist that you insure it under out and about, and the 0.1% that I dared to go on a quick weekend away (1st in 5 years) this happened. So again, I am really relieved that I have it insured.

I am just waiting for Friday to get the 6S Plus; will try and get one from iStore with iCare, but as my husband has been due for an upgrade since August, I will basically get one from wherever I can get it soonest.

This is just what has been working for us as we have had a few insurance claims. I may be looking into moving over to Discovery Insure though.

Depends on your risk profile.. if I was in Sa only I would agree slightly(because if you get hijacked or held up they will ask for it.. or will they? not sure if Sa criminals are aware idevices are useless stolen if locked) but if u travel a lot having devices covered for theft particularly when u leave them in hotels is needed.

Phones are insured by a broker who uses Santam, pay about R150 a month but when one of the phones were stolen last month they paid out the full amount with no excess

The iStore used to charge half that and give you two repairs/year (at R500 excess per repair).

I won't be buying their insurance again this year ... just not worth it.

Fully agree, rather spend the money on more memory

This is really a huge fail by Core Group, each year they've massively increased the cost of iCare and now they're reducing its benefits too.

2013 the cost was R299 (2 x R500 repairs), 2014 was R799 (2 x R800 repairs) and now 2015 is R1299 (1 x R1000 repair).

Wish Apple would just directly supply to SA...
