iPhone iOS 4.1 update battery drain on iPhone 4

It seems my problem has fixed itself. I didn't change anything but just let it drain 2 or 3 times already and then charge it fully overnight. I am SO relieved the problem is gone.

Glad to hear that buddy ;)

However, after reading your story, I'm still afraid to update to 4.1 and am running 4.0.2

@Anony-mousse: What's the performance like now? I got a iPhone4 last week and the battery lasts all day but certainly needs a recharge overnight. I have email push off but 3G is on.

In my experience, it is still sucky.

Have tried disabling 3G and Bluetooth, not much of a difference. My next attempt would be turning off location services, WiFi, Bluetooth, Push, 3G and whatever else could possibly use some power. Hopefully i can trace the source (or be lucky like anonymouse and just drain it a few times)

How much Standby/Usage do you guys get on an average charge?

When I got home from work tonight it was on 4 hours usage, 22 hours standby and still had 31% battery left

Seems pretty much in the same area than mine. I came home with 45% remaining, 4h15m usage, 12hr standby. On my 2g, with the same usage, I would have at least 60% remaining (provided, no push was used at the time, no backgrounding, no 3g). All other settings were roughly the same. But the 2G was >2years old, and the batteries have improved a lot over the years/models. I need to charge daily, whereas Wifey's BB Curve goes till about 3 days.

Ok, so sounds like you don't have a problem then, you're just used to the battery life on your old phone. I had the 3G and the 3Gs and I must say that battery life on the 4 is definitely better for me.

No, there is def a problem. I do not get close to what I should. I actually disabled a few services now, and I am still on 87% which seems much better (and normal actually).
Will start to enable services in the next few days and will give feedback on what

Does your consume the kind of content and services you do on your iPhone though? My wife also has a curve, but uses it for 1 mailbox, FB and BBM only. I'm running fb, twitter, several mailboxes, location services, etc. How many mailboxes and notifications are you running in comparison to the BB and ur 2G?
Did you turn your phone off after making the changes? I put the 3G on again yesterday and could see a visible increased drain. So I disabled it, but my battery still drained away until I shut the phone down, thereafter it was fine again.

'field tested' my new iPhone4 today. It came with v4.1 pre-installed. 3G, wifi and blue teeth on. Push off.

Time since last full charge-
Usage: 5 hours 44 mins.
Standby: 13 hours 7 mins.
Battery: 10%

Do these stats look ok to you? Seem ok to me. What do you think?

A colleague also suggested to change the battery indicator to show the bars not % remaining. He reckons the bars are less troubling than the actual figures psychologically.

Yep. 3G uses up that battery.

Completely agree with this approach. Otherwise you start freaking out about every percent dropped

Given, I do use more services than the SO on her BB. But anyway, think I have found the root of my problem.
PUSH = ON
Bluetooth = OFF (This was quite a big culprit)
3G = OFF
Location Services = OFF
WiFi ask to join networks = OFF (This helped a great deal)

Reset network settings. I appear to have decent battery life again!

How I wish i had SBSettings now, so that I could easily enable these services only when needed without going through the entire settings menu!

3G "ON" drains my 3GS in a matter of 3hrs.. So i switch it on when i need it, but @ home & @ work I'm on wifi.. which I use together with notes traveller to receive my work mail when I'm not behind laptop.. My phone is usually still on 70% after i get home (+/- 10hr working day)... not bad wrt battery usage on wifi!

The performance is really good now. 13 hours of usage (whereas it was quite some hours just listening to music) and 26 hours or so standby. I can go for 2 days if I don't use it excessively. Took it off the charger yesterday about 1pm, used it regularly during the day, 3G always on, location always on, 3g browsing, email... now it is down to 46%.

I realised that the percentage indicator is confused sometimes after a reboot. I start believing this might not be a real battery drainage but just a bug of the battery indicator.

almost 9 hours later, lots of web browsing, music and email, wifi and 3g, even some navigation, now down to 7%

Ok, so now it seems that I have a battery problem, even though I'm still running 4.0.2

I installed a bunch of new apps last night and this morning the battery was on 72%. Usually it would be on 90% or so.

3 hours later, with hardly any usage it dropped to 60%. None of the new apps were running in the background, but I still uninstalled most of them (except for two). I think I will drain my battery completely and see what happens next morning. Very weird though. My battery life has been perfect until now and as I mentioned that the only thing I did was to isntall a bunch of new apps

Sounds similar to mine. Question is though .. are you happy with that?

That's from Tuesday 1pm until Wednesday evening and I used it a lot. I don't think that's bad for a smart phone this caliber.
