the Omnia is much better, and (apparently) cheaper...

How do you know this? In my opinion the iPhone UI is far better, SAMSUNG's UI and phone software(from personal experience) sucks bollocks.

i bought my iphone yesterday and i am getting it tomorrow and thats the price i paid too, but check out: www.premiumphones.co.za and igear and http://hertenberger.co.za/?p=1740

i think its utterly stupid to pay so much for the iphone ... and trust me i can easily afford one, but def aint gonna fork out R10k plus for them esp when u can get them much cheaper ... Rendier's R7500 price tag is a lot better than what you paid ... i think it def needs to be competitively priced with the htc diamond and samsung omnia ... not double the price ... but you will get your apple fanbois who are crazy enough or stupid enough to pay so much for what in the end is just a phone ...

You will also get people attacking VC for not releasing anything, when they're contractually obliged to keep their mouths shut.

I will refrain from commenting on prices until the official prices have been released by VC themselves, everyone else is effectively selling grey phones, and I've had my fair share of issues with those before so I wouldn't touch them with a 40ft bargepole.

The Omnia is running windows mobile 6, it might not be as nice and pretty
as the iphone, but you can get plenty of software for it.

There is no question that the omnia's specs are much better than the iphone.

- 5MB camera with auto focus, face/smile recognition
- TRUE gps
- Front VGA camera (for video calling)
- Removable storage
- HSDPA 7.2

And even though it's almost 2009....i need to mention that the omnia
can send MMS'S!!!!
W O W!
lol

iphone does have a better UI than the omnia and iphone also has a GPS unit built in ..... BUT apple very smartly through it license prevents any 3rd party apps to develop turn by turn nav software, which makes the gps then ... imo ... usless!!!! ...

thats why id get the iphone for my sister and GF and get myself the omnia ...

That's why i said TRUE GPS.

The iphone does have a GPS, but at the moment, it's not really usable in SA.

By the way...please let me know if you find a place that sales the Omnia...
I think at the moment only autopage are selling them...(I don't really wanna move to autopage...)

Yep better specs(minus WM) the iPhone does lack in that department but I'll give the Omnia a test drive before I choose to buy it tough, I don't like complicated phones personally just need a great music player, SMS, email and phone capability.

Eh? I thought tomtom were already developing a turn-by-turn app for the iphone?

Apple's popular iPhone 3G will launch in South Africa on 28 September, according to industry sources.

The handset, which also includes iPod music playing capabilities, will be available from Vodacom on both contract and prepaid options.

As of yet no cost specifics have been confirmed, but it is estimated that a contract will include a R1500 to R2000 pay-in on a business contract for the 8GB model, and a R2000 to R2500 pay-in for the 16GB model.

On the pre-paid option, the iPhone 3G will likely retail for between R5000 and R6000 for the 8GB model, and between R7000 and R8000 for the 16GB model.

Apparently Vodacom is still finalising the pricing and awaiting approval for the handheld on its network, but Cellucity branches are already advertising the 28 September launch date.

Pre-bookings can be done via Cellucity or Vodacom itself.

Also speculative, though. The date is pretty close now: has anyone who joined the queue when the iPhone was first announced had any indication from Vodacom as to what the pricing will be? To pitch it as a high-end product seems to go against Apple's intentions of grabbing as big a market share as possible, so I'd be inclined to look to the lower price point. As so many have pointed out (some more often than others!), there's a lot of competition in the market and a snappy UI will only get you so far.

The prices in the original post are way too high, while those in the quote posted by bwana are far closer to the actual sales price. The iPhone 3G 8GB will go for around R5000 - R6000 pre-paid, not R9000. Trust me on that.

As for the iPhone vs Omnia debate, it all comes down to features vs the interface. After years of comparing phones based on feature lists, I now only have one key criterion when it comes to choosing a phone: Usability.

I need something that makes the stuff I do 90% of the time; making calls, sending SMS's and occasionally looking something up online, as smooth and easy as possible. I'm tired of feeling like I have to fight my phone just to get things done, and so far that's how I've felt with every single WinMo and Nokia S60 phone I've ever owned.

Honestly, I'm happy to do without a front-mounted camera and a 5mp camera on the back for the sake of getting a superior user interface. I'm still not entirely convinced that the iPhone *is* the phone for me or that its interface is entirely perfect, but I'm pretty sure it's better as a phone than the Omnia is.
