iPhone pricing comparison

You can not compair SA prices to UK, US, AUS, NZ or country so directly IMO.

FFS then I would have been earning +- 60k a month as a labourer

Prepaid is the only clear way of determining if the device is at a fair price.

BUT, you have to bear in mind that other networks (Aus & Kiwi's) phones are network locked - ours in SA are not. That would affect the pricing by a large margin, I would think?

I'm sorry but this article seems a little too defensive.

Have poor Vodacom realised the over-priced the iPhone and they're not selling as many units as they should be. It's a no brainer guys, the economy is shot and an apple logo doesn't automatically turn the consumers into the suckers you thought they would be. Stop whining, and blaming apple.

Drop the price already. I ain't burning the cash on something that will be fully covered by a contract in a couple of months. I'm an apple user in SA, I've learnt to be very patient.

My Broadband has ABSOLUTELY no reporting integrity.

They don't lay down all the facts!

The iPhone in South Africa is UNLOCKED, the iPhone in Aus and New Zealand are not, thus you cannot make ANY PRICE COMPARISON. None at all.

According to Apple it's not network locked in NZ either and as there are three carriers of the phone in Australia, as opposed to one, they're afforded considerably more choice.

In the EU countries that offer the iPhone on pre-paid (unlocked) the cost is pretty much EU500 everywhere. Which at R12/EU is R6000. Which gets you very close to our R6400. What everyone keeps overlooking is that Apple is punting the iPhone in the HTC and BB space (features and functionality aside - that horse has been beaten to death) how much are you paying cash for those phones? Either the same or more.

Exactly the point! Ya, networked locked makes a difference.. But if you could get the phone on MTN and Virgin aswel, it would not make a difference (Those who call themselves my service provider, yes I C for myself, but that's only because the call quiality is too rubbish to make a phone call, so I have to visit the person to actually C what they are saying)

This is unture. Prepaid phones in; italy, greece and portugal cost 500EU, but if you want to really Unlock it (so it works with any carrier), it costs another 200EU ontop of that so its more around the R8000 rand mark.

Why must citizens of poorer countries always pay more for these type of products that those in the richer countries? I guess I'll never understand.

If you were to import an iPhone3G from elsewhere, would it work in SA? If so, which networks? I heard that Vodacom had to upgrade their towers to cater for the iPhone3G and as a result you can't use 3G properly on say MTN's network. Is this true? Could I buy an iPhone3G from either Vodacom or abroad and use it properly on MTN?
