iPhone push and WhatsApp

I am having WhatsApp issues with every single one of my friends with iPhones. Usually, (I think this is when the phone is not in use, perhaps lying on the counter, or in the pocket or handbag) my WhatsApp messages takes about 10 to 20 minutes to get delivered to their phones. I send the message and the first tick (meaning sent from my device) appears immediately, and much later, the second one appears (meaning it's been delivered to the destination device).

They don't realize this, and think nothing is wrong. They think WhatsApp is working perfectly because they got the message, meanwhile it was sent quite a while ago. This does not happen on Symbian, Android or BB phones. ONLY iPhones. Perhaps some sleep mode that disabled background data or something? Anyone else experience this?

No it's actually the one reason why I like the iPhone and specifically push notifications so much. It is delivering to their phones immediately, assuming they have a data connection active, but the way the app works on iOS means that you have to physically open the application for it to register a message receipt and thus give the sender a second tick.

For example, let's assume you send me a message. You'll get a tick and as soon as the message comes through to me I'll get a push notification with the message on my screen. At this point though, you will still only have 1 tick. It's only when I actually click on the notification or open whatsapp itself that you will get the second tick. So technically I can receive and read a message via push notifications without you even knowing.

Hope that makes sense?

I have not experienced this. My friends and family use Whatsapp quite a bit on our iPhones and the notifications are usually instant. Is it possible the people you are messaging are in an area with poor reception?

No, it's got nothing to do with reception. This is quite consistent wherever we are. But I think Dames have answered by question.

I have noticed this slightly different iPhone notification behavior as well. When you send a msg to a blackberry you get the confirmation tick right away even if the person has not looked at the message.

WhatsApp does not have a MESSAGE READ notification. The second tick is only to show that the message has been delivered to the device, not necessarily that it has been viewed.

What you are explaining is clear and understandable, but it should not be working this way. The first tick is the "sent" notification, and the second tick is the "delivered" notification. There are no "message read" notifications on Whatsapp.

I think there might be some setting on the iPhone which is causing synchronisation to happen at intervals, or it could be a network related problem in the OP's area.

What I'm getting from Dames' post is that the message does go through immediately, but the DELIVERED tick does not. What I find strange, is that EVERY SINGLE TIME a delayed message is sent, the other person only replies much later, leading me to think that it does not in fact get delivered immediately.

I have not been able to test this because of goddamn Murphy's Law. :( But I will this weekend and see what I can come up with.

EDIT: What I mean by when a delayed message is sent, is a message that I sent that did not get the DELIVERED tick immediately, yet the recipient's iPhone is on and working.

I never said that it did. i was just saying that if you send a person with an iphone a whatsapp msg, you only get the delivered tick when they read the message (or open whatsapp), but I have noticed that when you send a blackberry person a message you get the tick right away without them reading it.

The message is still displayed on the persons iphone screen, but no delivered tick until they open whatsapp.

Ok, I understand now what you mean. That means Symbian, Android and BB work the same way, only iPhone actually shows both ticks only when the message is read then?

From my experience, yes.

This I will have to test again. I have had a friend leave his iPhone on the table, wait for it to go into sleep mode, and send a message. Then it went through and I got both ticks, without him touching the phone. Other times it won't. Goddamn iPhone :p

I'll test again when I get time.

Not sure why you're complaining, at least you can hide your "Last seen" timestamp :D The rest of us are still being hounded for ignoring people.

Don't take my post as fact. But I can say that it's always been the case in my experience. You'll also notice that every time you open whatsapp it first has to connect before any messages actually come through into the app, even if you've already got push notifications for them.

What I was complaining about is messages being delayed, only getting through to the iPhone recipient 10 to 20 minutes after I sent it.

What you're essentially getting is a delivery notice - when the iPhone user reads the message the double tick comes through. Maybe it's just me but I'd prefer it if all the other phones behaved this way, a'la blackberry's BBM.

I get what you're saying, it seems only iPhone is behaving this way. Although I've tested this by sending test messages with my friend sitting next to me, his phone on the table, and it beeps, I get both ticks, without him opening the message. Other times it takes ages to go through. Odd. Will test this weekend again.

OK so the behavior on iPhone as described in this thread seems to be standard. I found this explanation on the WhatsApp website:

If you only see a single green check mark next to your message, there is likely nothing wrong with WhatsApp or your phone. There may be several reasons why your message is delivered to the server, but not to your chat partner:

Their phone might be turned off or their phone's battery might be dead.
They could be sleeping, especially if they live in a different time zone.
They may not be connected to the internet (for example, if they are in an elevator, roaming or have no data credits).
They might have seen the notification on the screen, but did not launch the app to acknowledge message receipt (very common in case of iPhone recipients).
They might have blocked you. For more information read this article.
