I have a colleague here at work who is using an iPHone 3g on the MTN Network. It's working perfectly, Voice and data (retrieved mail from our exchange server).

He recently travelled overseas (Mauritius) and found that he could no longer retrieve emails. He was also unable to surf the internet. The voice side worked perfectly. He could, however, get his mails using his laptop which has a Vodacom data SIM - so it's not an issue with the mail server.

The data roaming setting on the iPhone was set to on.

Does anyone know of any other settings which must be activated? Or has anyone had this issue with an iPhone when travelling abroad?

Thanks in advance!

Retrieving with the laptop would use a Vodacom affiliate in Mauritius. Maybe the MTN partner there doesn't have data coverage?

I was in Mauritius last month and used my iPhone on a couple days to retrieve email and surf the web on it without any issues. All my voice calls were sent to voicemail. You might have to enable 3g on the phone although coverage is not great for 3g (where we were in any case). Did he have data roaming enabled from here or did he enable it there? I remember that you had to enable certain things on the home network prior to departure.

Are you on MTN or Vodacom?

He switched on Data Roaming (on the phone) once he got there. His sim has been activated for international roaming for a long time now.

3G on the phone was enabled. If there is only GPRS over there as Speedster pointed out, then would the phone only connect if there was 3g reception? Would it not automatically connect to GPRS ?

I'm not sure about the iPhone. Most phones have an option for "3G only", if that wat selected then it won't downscale to GPRS automatically.

Go to > Settings - General - Network - Cellular Data Network then type "internet" in VPN leave username and password blank.

Really dont know why they make it a secret, the amount of revenue they making of int data rates, I would make sure every customer knew about this!

I went to that spot, i assume you mean UPN not VPN. VPN is in a different spot and looks very complicated. I entered internet as you suggest.

Thanks very much for the assistance.....
Will only know if it works when he goes overseas again though!! :)
