Android devices collectively represented a 34% share of the US market in the quarter, and with growth of 851% Android became the largest smart phone platform in the country.

I think it's incredibly healthy for the market that Apple is losing share and that there is a viable alternative. Although a fan of the iPhone (I have a 3gs), Apple no longer has the lead it used to have. When I got my phone the choice was the iphone, storm and wm6 devices. Thanks to Android consumers now have a choice. I look forward to my contract renewal in September where I can get down to choosing my new phone...
 
Let's get down to brass taxes here guy's. If the iPhone had free internet it would kill the BB no two ways about it, it's the only reason people buy the BB, that and the range available and it's availability on different networks which would explain the numbers. Ease of use ? you must be smoking crack if you think the BB is easier to use than the iPhone.

What if you don't like a touch screen? I've had a touch screen for the last 2 years and I still prefer a qwerty.
 
I have a buddy who has an iPhone. Spent some time with him over the hols and his phone crashed. Only problem is there is no "off" button and he can't take out the battery so he had to wait for the battery to go flat in order to be able to reboot. Sat there laughing at him with my HTC in my hand...
 
Its an instance no-cred when you ask someone about phones and they start mentioning fruit.

A recent survey in the US showed the the average iPhone user used 338mb of data per month. In Vodacom's terms that's going to cost between R139 and R189 on contract. I personally dont feel the iPhone is worth the extra R80 to use the device like it was intended to be used, let alone what vodacom charges for the iPhone.

I'm afraid that being ignorant isn't the phone's fault. Google "reboot iphone" and read the very first result...

I agree with you that in South Africa, Vodacom is completely to blame for the iPhone's lack of market penetration. I think the question should be what gives one the most value for money in SA, and that may be the BB. From an apple to apples (excuse the pun) comparison, for me the iPhone is the better phone for what I use it for.

Also BB is more than free data, its integration service is unmatched. Besides that its still the only real push to mail service there is.

How about just the stock standard email client on Symbian? It is the most prevalent mobile email client in the world and it just works. You don't have to install anything or have "special internet" for it - it just works by connecting people from the company that does just that.
 
moosag - you made mention of how your place of work bitched about getting your iPhone onto your corporate server - those businesses which have BES, are not likely to make a change to anything else in the next year and a half or so. Not in SA anyway I think (then again it's only me thinking)

I Know of companies who do. And I know of companies who dont. More often than not people's emotions get the better of them with regards to technology and fan boy stuff. I know of companies where the Top order has iPhones and they've spent a fair amount of infrastructure to get email to their phones.. Unfortunately I aint in the top order. IT Infrastrcutre departments will always bitch and moan. Its their order of their day :P

I have to agree with you. BB has become a household name in SA. Over the next 12-24 months it will eat up the lions share of the market place. Simply by word of mouth. People love it and its services are the best on the market ATM. Essentially all competitors (apple, android, etc..) will have to compete with BB for market share locally. The only advantage apple has is brand loyalty from the fan boys and girls. Those who are not "technically" inclined will go for the iPhone to be "different". As for the rest, HTC, LG, Samsung,WM6 and even Nokia what ever brand loyalty they had is gone.

@hughgrection22b: thanks dude. Did not know that... I was always under the impression of the latter. Looks like Jobs pulled one on me.. That is super sneaky! And here I thought Apple trying to get its devices into peoples hands for the sake of humanity and world peace :P hahaha

Personally I still think Android will dominate come hell or high waters with Apple,BB and possibly WM7 a close second. I say this simply because the market is grossly underestimating the Android platform. An open source mobile platform capable of going head to head with the iPhonea and similar devices is going to dominate. More innovation and developer adoption will happen in this space. Android devices may be expensive now, but the turn around time to offer a cheap run of the mill device to compete with any device in both upper and lower market ranges will be super easy.

Nothing stops Android based phones from going head to head with BB or the iPhone. At the moment they focusing more on the iPhone while BB is taking market share quietly in the background laughing at everyone playing with their bells and whistles. Its not long till some manufacturer wakes up and realizes they can take BB head on. Either way its all speculation at this point. The next couple of months will reveal the trend of the industry...

Whats yor guys thoughts on Bada, Memo Linux, and other smaller Mobile OS's??? Personally I think we will only see 4 main Mobile Platforms in the near future (iOS, Android, WM7, BB)???

Nokia had one of the biggest followings here locally in terms of brand loyalty. Is it safe to say that has completely disappeared?? I havnet used a nokia or head anyone talk about an upcoming nokia in a while??
 
Nokia will die unless they re-invent themselves ie ......newer or unique devices
 
The Nokia N8 is coming out pretty soon and it is going to be a big one in terms of multimedia - something BB and the iPhone is not that great at. In the medium term Nokia is going Meego for their smartphones and based on the favorable performance of Andriod and other Linux based mobiles OSes it is pretty much a given that Nokia will stay on top.

That the whole point of BB - its not about the phones - its about the traffic. It is a big cartel that is run between the networks and RIM. The only person that looses out are the crackberry users who use weak phones to get something they believe is free.
 
RIM is on the decline - just look at the latest study - http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire...-as-smartphones-grab-25-of-u-s-mobile-market/ . We are almost certainly entering the age of Android, as developers currently see that platform as the future. BB in SA is where it is due to:

1. Massive mismanagement of the iphone in SA by Vodacom
2. The perception of "free data" by BB users
3. Excellent marketing of the BB
4. Lack of education of users (evident by some of the uninformed comments in this thread)
