Hi guys,

I'm a total newbie to Ubuntu (having just installed the acclaimed Hardy Heron release).

My setup is as follows: we have a desktop PC running XP with Routesentry, Treewalk and iPig server running on it successfully (thanks ant1b0dy). Previously, my laptop had Vista iPig client successfully routing international and local traffic on the desktop.

But now, with Ubuntu, I am clueless as to what to do. I have been trying to grasp Bernie's post, "Splitting International and Local Bandwidth with IPcop." Pretty much all of it is over my head.

Is there not an alternative to iPig which runs on both XP and Ubuntu? Surely this would be the simplest solution? What other ways can I get international and local routing?

Cheers!
David

Just a quick question before I continue searching: should I perhaps install install iPig through wine?

Speaking of Pigs.....

Pink, the colour of flowers and pigs! ;-)

what is this iPig?

You could install CCProxy on your windows PC, and on the linux PC just enter the Windows PC IP Address in the browser proxy settings.

or you could setup a Linksys WRT54GL which only takes a few minutes to setup. See this thread for more info Splitting international and local traffic on a Linksys WRT54G

Thank you. I will look into this. But I would have to buy a Linksys :/ as I have a Mega 105WR

First you can try CCProxy as this won't require any additional hardware, how ever this requires more works as you would have to add proxy settings to all the pc's.

as for the Linksys traffic splitting, only require you to setup the router once, you won't need to use Route Sentry anymore. You'll need to buy a Linksys WRT54GL, which is only a router, not a modem, so you'll connect the Linksys to the Mega100.

Brilliant.

I would imagine that using this method, I will be unable to use anything but my browser? Is there any way to set it up so that I can use Skype and Synaptic Package Manager?

Cheers,
David

Most Programs have an option to add proxy settings, just check the Properties/Preferences, their should be a option.

Yes, you're right. I just checked the package manager. It has one :) Skype will have one too. Just haven't installed it yet.

Thanks again.

mh348, I got it working! Really simple setup. Thanks again for all the help.

Much simpler setup than going the Linksys route--or any of the others I linked to above.

So it's working well at the moment... just for one thing. The Synaptic Package Manager successfully downloads updates/files from the local ubuntu server. But, for some reason, it doesn't gain access to the update server (i.e. when it needs to refresh the list of available programs and when it checks for updates for the PC).

Is there not a proxy application that can be installed which can exert universal influence over all network activity on the PC?
