My daughter brought her friends ipod home for me to put songs on and now there are no songs on it but if I plug it into winamp it shows the songs are there. What is happening here?

thanks.

hmm that sounds strange, I use Itunes to manage my music and transfer it onto my Ipod, a quick search suggests this as a solution

ok i fixed it

here was what was wrong in case anyone else ever has the same problem:

if you view the ipod as a disk and explore it, enable "view hidden files" or whatever in windows. iPod_Control folder appears. go into it and then into the iTunes subfolder. i saw two files, one named iTunesDB which was ~3kb and one named iTunesDB.old which was like 6.7mb

<me> hmmm....

deleted iTunesDB and renamed iTunesDB.old to iTunesDB and it was fixed

NOTE: THIS IS FROM A SEARCH, I CANNOT VOUCH WHAT IT WILL DO

It also seems to be a common problem, there are multiple possible solutions suggested if you do a google search depending on which ipod it is, if you are using any winamp add-ons etc.

I have no idea how these things work and I cannot even move this wheel thing in the front and when i used itunes a few years ago it was a nightmare so i uses winamp as it was easier.

thanks for the info and link i will look now and see if i can fix it. I thought of copying everything i see into a file on my pc then back to the ipod.

grrrrrrrr. Itunes. pfffffft.
It managed to remove every tag of every mp3 of mine in 2000. Was a bug in one if its releases... have vowed to smite it if ever it stumbles across my shadow again. It took me a loooong loooong time to finally fix all the tunes... and then big bad Seagate 7200.11 killed them again! * my sad long story for another day *

BUT... I do know of an alternative you can try... I use it and it seems to play very nicely with the iPod...

http://www.floola.com/

There are others, I know, but Floola has not given any trouble in the years I have used it.

That probably won't work. iPods store things strangely... and you will scratch your head even more.

I would suggest downloading Floola. Preferably on a machine that Winamp is not installed on... and let it find your tunes. It can even recover lost or orphaned mp3's and it also lets you copy songs to your pc in a format that makes sense.

I know that iTunes (pffffft) does all that... but Floola and its ilk are not iTunes.. and that is why I use them ! :}

What model / generation iPod is it ?

Um.. Wayne, did you use iTunes to add the music to the iPod?
If you juct copy the mp3's onto the device Winamp and the like will be able to play the music, but she will not be able to play it on the device (as is).
She could just take the iPod home and drag the music from her iPod in explorer into itunes and it will add it to the iPods play list.
It will make a duplicate of the song on the iPod so if space is an issue she should copy it onto her computer first then drag it into iTunes.

To get around this you could install Rockbox onto the iPod, depending on which one, and then you could play mp3's straight from the drive where you copy'd them.
Be carfull tho, installing Rockbox will void your warranty.
Its much simpler than having to use iTunes imo.

I don't know what they use but I only use winamp as it was easier for me to use but as I said earlier I can see the songs on the ipod in winamp but the actually machine shows nothing.

Yes, that does not mean the songs are not there, she just has to use her Itunes to add them to the Ipods playlist. It will be easier than you downloading new software and risking muddling the iPods settings with iTunes.
I'm sure your daughters friend will have iTunes on her pc...

ok i think i should do what you suggest and if she has problems they can bring it back monday and I will stuff it up even more for her. shame the thing is almost full of churchy songs.

ok update time, are you sitting quietly now?

I tried to work on the ipod and had double posting in the thing and then the one programme I used said that i needed to reset the ipod or something then gave me an error message. I then pm'd kilo to tell him what happened and he he said he would do it for me and thats exactly what he did. He finished 5 mins before I had to leave to fetch my daughter and when I checked the ipod was showing the songs. I gave it back to my daughters friend at school and she was so thrilled and I told her who did it and how and told her she must just check what is all on there as I had no time to check myself.

So thanks to kilo for the help AGAIN, and to the other guys who gave input it is much appreciated.
