I think this is very close to happening if not this year then it will be 2011.
This new patent that gives macbooks the ability to phone reiterates my prediction, i think.

Some say Apple won't do it because it will influence iPhone sales, but to me the iPad already
kindof-sortof competes with iphone.

I think he means data only a-la-iPad. I get what you're saying Macboer but I don't see it happening soon somehow. They will be getting cameras and high-rez screens soon though.

On an unrelated note, I'm pretty excited about that Peel 520 which converts an iPod touch into a phone. Now that can't come soon enough, (it's a real product from China)

Now THAT is kinda retarded to me. But that's just me. Anywho, if Apple dont do it(ipod with 3g) some other company should. It would be like a iPad that can fit in your pocket...mmm, guess it is kind of retarded cause one could just as well get an android device... it stil won't be iOS though. :P

Ps. would it cost much more to put in the 3g radio-thingy?

An iPod Touch with 3G/HSPA for data only (like iPad) will be most welcome (and it can be done, as proven by iPad and Kindle).

I doubt apple wonders about if it can or cannot be done but rather why do it? The product would compete directly with apple's own range. Want pocket-size iOS with 3G? Get an iPhone. Want 3G-only iOS device? Get an iPad. Want 3g-only iOS pocket-size device? Get lost.

A 3G iPodTouch would compete directly with the iPhone. In fact, I do believe that the discouragement for using it would be compounded by VOIP capabilities, making it an iPod Phone.

You can already - sort of - do this via tethering the ipod to your phone with wifi. It's very hack-ish though.

seems i'm not crazy afterall.

AppleInsider:
"People familiar with Apple's plans have also heard over the last few months that the company has strongly considered mimicking its iPad offerings by adding a 3G option to some of its iPod touch portable media players, though it is unclear whether the Cupertino-based company has decided to proceed with those plans as part of next week's announcement.

A similar move was made earlier this year when Apple launched the iPad. The company now offers a Wi-Fi-only iPad, in addition to a version with a 3G radio for an additional $130. Currently, the iPod touch only offers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but 4th-generation prototypes with a SIM tray akin to the iPhone 4's are said to exist."

I didn't think it would happen, looks like you may have been right. This will basically be like a thinner iPhone, awesome!

A 3G data connection would be nice. But I am holding out for a 128 or (please, your Steveness) 256 GB iPod Touch. Of course that would be the death blow for the iPod Classic so I suppose it will never happen.

But I was seriously disappointed when the iPhone4 did not advance beyond 32 GB.
