Hey guys,

I'm setting up my old laptop as a security centre and using its built in webcam for video surveillance. I'm using ispy connect software.

The one thing I'm struggling to find is an IR/ night-time camera to use with the system... Reason being is I want to be able to see what my pets are doing when ever ones asleep

Does anyone have any advice on where to find one in Cape Town or where to order one on-line??

budget?

If you want to do this for as little money as possible then get a cheap webcam and remove the IR filter. This turns it into a camera that can see in the near-infrared region. This mod also significantly increases the sensitivity of the camera. I find that this is good enough for outside security monitoring with only the ambient street lighting. If you do not have enough ambient light inside the house then you may have to add a light source - a few IR LEDs should be able to do the job.

There are a lot of articles on this type of mod on the internet. Usually a webcam with a screw out lens is the best.

Good software for security monitoring under Linux includes motion (easy setup) and zoneminder (powerful but a ***** to set up properly). I'm sure that there will also be equally capable Windows / OSX equivalents.

As an aside, this is also interesting for the keen photographers out there. You get all the funky daytime IR effects without having to invest a lot in equipment.

Thanks for the replies guys... My budget is R500.

I like garyc's idea. Will give it a try and post the results :)

The average laptop web-cam is less than 1 megapixel.

You can use it to spy on your pets but if you are thinking of using it for security, well, that would result in this kind of situation:

But worse...
