I have an employee who is on a FWW for desertion of post, this Saturday he did not pitch for work, my foreman went to his house to go pick him up, the employee was not there and this morning the employee did not produce a doctor's note and apparently told the foreman he had 'stuff to do'.

Our disciplinary code recommends a WW for unauthorised absenteeism, but I see desertion of post and the absenteeism as related, can I continue with a hearing?

Don't want to get to a hearing and find out these things aren't related.

deserting a post means you actually pitched up for work, then left without asking

So no. Not related

Okay thanks, what would you recommend then?

Just for further clarification both offences fall under "ABSENTEEISM AND TIME KEEPING OFFENCES" so that still doesn't make them related?

Well, according to me, deserting your post means you're absent from work for an extended period of time without notification to the employer and the employer is unable to contact the person. Maybe this will help clarify: http://www.labourguide.co.za/desertion

However, in your situation he was able to make contact with the employee after the 1 day of absenteeism. He just didn't bother to pitch for work.

This also gives a nice description of absenteeism and what it means: http://www.labourguide.co.za/absenteeism

Desertion AFAIK requires some intention to never permanently return to the post - whereas absenteeism is temporary. They are not the same offences.
