I'm on a website and highlight 'some text'.

Then I right-click on the highlight and select "Search Google for 'some text' "

It then takes me away from the original page to the search result - is there a way to make the search open in a new tab without taking me away from the original ?

sorry i know this is not going to help you, but my chrome browser opens in a new tab. might be a setting somewhere.

Have you tried updating ? uninstall / reinstall ?

Yes there is.

If you right click and search google it will open new tab and take you to that tab.
If you right click, Hold Press Ctrl and select search google it will open new tab but keep you on the existing page/tab
Using Shift instead will open it in new Window not a tab

So very similar to using those keys with normal hyperlinks

This tip applies to any browser running on Windows, not just Chrome.
