Is Afrihost bad or is my line the problem.

Last year I moved to Afrihost from Webafrica and all seemed to be great. There were the occasional timeouts on international sites but nothing too serious.

For the last 2 months or so it has detoriated to frustrating levels. Pages frequently time out (it took almost 10 minutes of refreshing to load this page), youtube rarely begins loading let alone playing and the speed is horrible (used to to download at 38kb/s now around 20-25kb/s).

Before I go blaming the ISP I was wondering if there was a way to test the actual line quality? What other tests can I do to try and determine the location of the problem.

I think its your line- Afrihost doesn't have their own exchanges- once my account was out of sync and telkom had to reset the connection on their side... but I have had no problems with Afrihost

This is a question I wanted to ask.

So if you buy a WebAfrica pre-paid voucher for unshaped, say, and your Telkom line is shaped, does nothing change?

You ISP shapes the connection not Telkom (unless Telkom is your ISP). So if you use a unshaped account from which ISP it will be unshaped and vice a versa.

What is the biggest evidence of an extremely shaped connection, if I may ask. I changed to Afrihost and am experiencing latency problems?
 
Afrihost's bandwidth is supplied by IS. I've heard the last couple of days there's been issues with slowness

My ping is shockingly high (916ms) to Cape Town, so I'm looking for reasons. The only change has been to an Afrihost ISP.

1) Cleaned out Temp files with Norton
2) Got Telkom 0800375375 to resync.

Problem solved!
 
Yep I think its your line, I am a commited Afrihost [ hope so , TOUCH WOOD.]
Call AFRIHOST Tech geeks they are VERY good and helpfull
 
Its not the line. The line either works or it doesn't...its just electric signals being sent. Besides, the line stats look OK.

IS is inherently a bit more temperamental than other accounts. Late at night its often better than everything else but during the day its usually worse. They shape heavily during the day.

Do the IS speed test again after 23:00. The ping will probably be about half what it currently is.

You said the download speed dropped. Could be shaping. Kinda depends on what you are downloading. A straight download won't get shaped but torrents etc will. The fact that the speedtest results are similar and yet you are reporting a speed drop smells of shaping to me.

With IS accounts, the ISP doesn't have a lot of control so giving Afrihost grief might not achieve much.
