Is Botswana an option?

Botswana is unrivalled as a country in Africa and offers a unique investment climate. Politically it is rated as the most stable country in Africa and was ranked number one for good governance in Africa, by the World Economic Forum in June 2003. The country also boosts an A2 / Prime 1 international credibility and credit worthiness rating which is the highest rating of any country in Africa. Foreign exchange reserves of around US$ 6 billion are amongst the highest in the developing world and the abolition of all foreign exchange controls in February 1999, means that capital, profits and dividends can be readily repatriated.

Botswana is a great country to live in. I have family who's been there for years. They came back because they were homesick but returned to Botswana pretty quickly.

Botswana has it's share of racist nut-jobs though. Consider this one. But it's much less than in S.A.

They have no Ocean :(

You can drive to Namibia for that. Namibia's not a bad option either - fairly peaceful for the most part.

.

That article is getting stale now. Its pretty much common knowledge ( and certainly should be on these forums) that it is a satirical piece.

Speaking of Namibia: It seems like large oil reserves might have been discovered over there.

LONDON, May 17 -- Arcadia Petroleum Ltd., operator of License 0010 off northern Namibia, has completed interpretation of 2D seismic shot in September 2007 that it's partner Tower Resources PLC, says confirms the presence of giant structures that could contain as much as 10 billion bbl of oil, unrisked, from three prospects.

The seismic data indicate a great probability that they would be oil bearing, Tower Resources said. Large volumes of associated gas would also be present.

These are early days yet but if this turns out to be even partially true then Namibia becomes another very attractive option. However, it seems like the Namibian government is far more racist/communist than Botswana. Together with T-bone, Namibia is one of Bob's biggest allies. That's exactly the kind of people that I'd like to get away from in the first place.

I think europe, Asia, America, Oceana or the moon are all better options than anywhere on this continent.

I was expecting more of this type of reply when I started this thread. It so happens that I can trace my family's ancestry on this continent back to 1654. There are very few, if any, "natives" that can do likewise. I love Africa and if I can make a decent living here whilst providing a safe environment for my children then I'd really prefer staying here. I dunno, maybe I'm delusional but to me it seems like there are places in Africa where a "colonist" like myself is still welcomed for the skills that I have to offer.

Does one need a visa to go to Bots or Nam, or can i just pitch up at the border post with my passport?

I would think Nam wouldn't take a liking to whities from SA, seen as we were fighting SWAPO in the border war. I like this idea of Botswana, it is practically home.

Nothing is gaurenteed anywhere, but "safe" and "Africa" are near impossible to put in the same sentence in a positive manner. I dunno what Africa can offer that other places can't x 2.

I've been overseas. It is nice and all but its' not Africa. This place is special even with all the trouble we have.

Most (70%) of Botswana's electricity is imported from South Africa's Eskom. 80% of domestic production is concentrated in one plant, Morupule Power Station near Palapye. Debswana operates the nearby Morupule Colliery to supply coal to it.

No Commonwealth country requires a Visa to get into Bots ;)

Bots is cool but is still reliant on SA (Ironic that they are doing better). So if SA went down the tubes Botswana would suffer. The other thing is that they have some insane HIV rate... like 80% but they manage it way better than us.

Honesty is the best policy:

Botswana is among the countries hardest hit by AIDS. In 2005 there were an estimated 270,000 people living with HIV. This, in a country with a total population below two million, gives Botswana an adult HIV prevalence rate of 24.1%, the second highest in the world after Swaziland. (An earlier UNAIDS estimate of 37.3% prevalence in Botswana is now thought to have been too high.)1

w1z4rd, of course it is easy to dig up lots of bad things about any country if you try. I'm just saying that it seems like Botswana is a far better place to be than SA at this point in time.

I know it's an old article - I didn't know it's been shown here before. But then, I only read this forum occasionally. Not exactly a great example of satire either.

If it's the "green mamba" - sure. As a visitor. You still need work/residence permit to work there.

Admittedly, my experience of Namibia is limited to living with families who are namibian citizens, so I don't know what it's like for South Africans settling there.

Botswana is the stablest economy in Africa and has been for years.

My in-Laws live there and they're very happy.
It's a lot better then SA in some regards but they don't have many of the luxuries we take for granted and it's still an African country so don't expect any governmental department to get anything done in a hurry.

That being said, it's definitely safer then SA.

Thanks a lot. Appreciated.

Having spent time in Namibia way back, I would say that Botswana is probably a more comfy option. Namibia gets frighteningly hot - I was struggling in Windhoek at times, getting badly burned from the sun. (Being a pale rooinek to begin with :)

On the other hand, there is/was a solid German population there, which made things kind of interesting - that whole German efficiency thing and good foods.. That may have changed by now though. I was there during the UNTAG deployment and run up to independence.

But yeah, for the folks who can't bear to leave the African continent, SA has a range of neighboring countries which have way less violence and trauma and hatred going on.

Which country was it, that welcomed the Zim farmers who wanted to farm? Was it Botswana, or Mozambique perhaps. I know one of the nearby countries was very very happy to have as many of the white Zim farmers as wanted to come and set up operations. Always a good sign, when a country understands that farmers actually help a country and its all about 'more food being available for all' than 'evil white people sitting on our land'.
