Is Hermanus or Sandbaai safe?

I am French, my wife is Xhosa and our kids only speak French & English. My wife has some Afrikaans knowledge though but does not speak it fluently. We live in France as I speak but would like to get a "second home" close to her family (Cape Town area).

Ah okay.
Plenty of Xhosa speakers in Hermanus and 99.9% of people speak English (even though most have Afrikaans as a first language). Don't think you will have communication issues wherever you decide to settle, including finding an English school for the kids.

French will be a problem though. There is zero French in use in SA.

in cpt there is alot of french speaking people

mainly in town

@epah also speaks french with his iphone and C1 tv
 
i dont speak afrikaans and never had a issue in hermanus/onrus/Stanford beyond the initial moment where thy figure out you have no idea what they are saying.

The top half of onrus is pretty decent. Think its called onrus north as you get sea views without having to deal with the traffic/congestion being close to the beach.

Traffic is really bad though in the christmas holiday periods. As its one road into onrus/hermanus/vermont when you are coming from stellenbosch/CPT.

What about West coast? Jakobsbaai is close to Cape Town, hospital, shopping mall etc.

I would think the schools are Afrikaans only but I can't be sure.
I go there quite a lot. Some nice stores for veggies, breads, brunch etc.
Place is really small but has a large Spar, medium sized Shoprite and an 7/11 sized OK Minimart.
 
I'd say Montagu is about the safest town I have lived in. None of our friends, nor their friends have been burgled or attacked.

The crime that exists is misbehaviour around certain drinking houses over the weekend. Some shoplifting at the SPAR and bad driving

A building contractor had some supplies stolen and it was discovered that the site watchman disappeared

Many truely beautiful old buildings too.
 
The coastal village of Hermanus is famous for many things, especially its epic position to see whales. This experience is enhanced by the stunning coastal path that winds atop the cliffs. However, recently when the cliff path was being extended a controversy erupted resulting in an unexpected gift to public.
