Or maybe I'm missing something. I'm trying to view pictures on an external hard disk using iPhoto on my laptop, this seem impossible unless I import all the files to my laptop. Can this be done?

If you dont want to import then why use iphoto at all? Just use the quick look slide show. :)

Push the space bar when you're on a pic. Then use the arrow keys.

Or just change the finder view to cover flow.

Or highlight them all, press play and you have a . . . . quick look slide show. :)

I don't want to import all the 1000's of images on my external - that defeats the original reason why I bought the external, I want to browse through them and pick some to drag or copy onto my laptop. Picasa also won't allow me to view a file on another hard drive. I'm using Canon's Image Browser at the moment, it's very crappy and crash every 10min.

Seems, you're not understanding our posts.

Try looking here then.

I know how Quicklook work. the problem is with QL there's none of the normal functionality, I can't drag the image into Photoshop or copy the thing unless I go back to the file view again.

Let's go back to the question, is the iPhoto library limited to the available disk space on the hard drive in your computer?

Not at all. You can have your librauary on the external drive but then if you want to use iPhoto you MUST have the external drive plugged in. It's a "limitation" of 99.99% of picture cataloguing software.

If you hold down Alt while clicking on the iPhoto icon, it asks you if you want to open a library from a different location. So you *can* keep your iPhoto library on an external drive. But I'll say again, iPhoto is an organisational too. It builds and manages a library of photos. It's not designed or intended to be a viewer that doesn't care how the files are organised.

OK cool. thats what I was looking for, how to add a new library to iPhoto, i don't mind having my external connected.

I have a 200GB HD in my Macbook P. which is ok for recent stuff but I have about 800gb of archived images on externals which I want to access occasionally. I think our libraries will always be bigger than our resources :-)

He mentions Photoshop. If he has a recent version, he should have Adobe Bridge with it. Use Adobe Bridge then.

Then you might want to consider Aperture.

My 22GB iPhoto library only has 6000 items in it (around 200 events)... how many photos fit in 800GB? Are you shooting 24MP RAW?
Stockphotos or weddings maybe? Do you make money from your pics?

Hi Bob, I shoot professionally http://www.louisvorster.com/ The oldest event currently in my iPhoto library is Oct. 24 2009(everything before that is archived) and my iPhoto library is 30gb(8600 items). Most my files since I started shooting digitally about 4 years ago is on the external, some scanned film stuff and old digital files are still on CD or DVD. I shoot mostly .jpg but a lot of the files are converted to .tif or .psd.

I'm not going to bother asking why jpg (some photographers are just weird like that ;)) but why are you using a consumer app like iphoto?
