Is it bad to change into first gear while moving?

So its fine to go in second gear at any speed?

you cant change from 5th to 2nd, if you at at a high speed, you'll smoke your engine.

5th- 2000revs you'll get away,4th-2500 revs you'll get away, 3rd-4000 revs you'll get away

On my car, I can't get 1st in gear unless I'm traveling at <10kmh.

As a general rule, you'll want to use first in two instances:
1) Car is standing still
2) Going up a *steep* incline in a weak car. After a while the car gets too slow for second gear. i.e. almost comes to a stop. Then you can use 1st. The car must however be seriously slow already.

Obviously I meant slow speeds....

My drivers license is booked for 12th August.

Then don't worry about switching to second.

You will switch to second only before you making a turn. And don't gear down when you stop (I wonder why one is not allowed to gear down ? It's saver aint it ?).

Because when you gear down, there's the risk of stalling your engine which can cause brakes to not work. Stupid, I know, and I don't think you even have this problem anymore with modern cars, but that's how it was explained to me. Might be wrong though.

I can agree with that. Sounds fair. I had a massive fall on a Bike I owned a couple of years ago because of gearing down.

V-twin bike with massive compression. Bike died while i was gearing down, thought I'll get it started again by gearing down one more time... problem is I was in the turn already :D The back wheel locked up and I "High sided" :o

But it does give you more control over the breaking if done correctly. I think they should teach people how to do it correctly rather than outlawing it ;)

Go back to first if i want to pull off fast when slowing down :)

Depending on car you shopuld be able to do abt 80 in second :)

Pitbull, yeah, it does offer more control over the vehicle, when done correctly. They key is to sync up the engine's rpm with the gearbox so that there's a smooth transition and the wheels are kept at a constant as possible level of friction with the road. This aids in cornering and also sounds pretty cool ^_^ Gotta love the throttle blip.

Only change to 1st gear when you're at a dead stop, for everything else (i.e. slow moving traffic etc.) use 2nd gear or just put it in neutral and let the car roll.

But seeing as this is for your drivers licence, you get bonus points for shifting from 5th to 2nd gear as ToxicBunny said.

How about I use a car with 6 gears and change down to first while going 200km in a 60km zone?

Traveling 200 kilometers seems a bit far to be driving without a licence hey. :D

Seriously though, if you have to even ask a question like that then it's quite clear that you're not ready for your licence test.

And I was being totally serious.

Pitbull : I know those conversions... I would just piss myself laughing to drive past Hellothere, sitting in mommy's car with the engine in pieces on the road cos he'd forced it into 1st whilst doing some ridiculous speed.

Oh and Hellothere, if you're one of those morons who think speeding is cool, please just skip your drivers license, we don't need more morons on the road.

Go to a quiet area and drive at 70km/h in 4th gear and then see what happens when you suddenly shift down to 1st gear. :)

Yup speeding is really cool. And I'm totally not being sarcastic towards your suggestions of changing down to first going really fast.
