to get up to 68kbps on a 384 line ? i downloaded a FF add-on (download manager) and it sometimes shows the current speed as 68kbps ... is that even possible or is it just exagerating the speed ?

Well, theoretically the maximum speed on a 384 line is 384kbps since it's a 384kbps line. If you mean KBps, then no, 68 is impossible.

FireFox's default download facility starts downloading before you see the download window.
When the window finally opens, it only then calculates the downloading speed, which would include the data already downloaded, resulting in seemingly faster download speeds, but it's the result of downloading prior to the measurement.

The fastest I've ever got is 45kbps and that was only once.

big B small b big B small b big B small b big B small b

If you use a big B we assume you're talking about BYTES
If you use a small b we assume you're talking about bits

Last night for about 5 or 10 seconds my torrents ran at 57, my top is usually 42...so yeah, there are spikes and bursts, but usually they are caused by clogging in my opinion. So you get data splutter:-)

No. That is your torrent client lying to you due to calculating an average over a small time period. If it indeed is as you suggest then I'll recommend you for a nobel prize in physics ;)

well my grabit has been doing funny things lately, it will look as if it has stop downloading for 10 seconds then pulls a chunk of data at one time, something like 200-300KBps then quiet for another couple of seconds and pulls 200-300KBps, strange and im on 384 :(

that is usually you anti virus scanning your data before pretty much sending it to grabit so in other words it downloads a bit then sends it all at once making it seem faster.

I have noticed that when i download something, my download starts at 65kbp/s then slides down to my regular 35.

I thought that Telkom were preparing an upgrade to 512.

Even if it was so i doubt my EVIL ISP would allow it anyways since im on 384...

100% agreed - physically impossible.

well on my 4 meg line i got 480kb+ speeds when download 4 files at same time normally mines maxes at 450 kb

sometimes, when FF resume downloading, it will calculate the downloaded part together with downloading part and give you an amazing number for download speed.
