Is it really that bad in SA?

We live in Dubai so we cant settle here as we can never have citizenship according to their laws. We are only allowed to live here whilst employed. If not employed they kick you out of the country pronto. No loyalty. Lol!

Are your only choices between SA and Dubai?

Well, we don't have terrorist attacks, we don't have natural disasters and we don't have intense NSA intimidation.

We have crime, that's about it

This was my parents' reasoning when deciding to return from living in the US and England my whole life.

In Joburg there is also serious municipal incompetence - it can take a lot of your time just trying to sort that out.

And then security costs (insurance, armed response, alarm systems & electric fences, etc).

I live in a DA controlled province. None of that shiat applies here (:

All we have is the odd break in to steal a DVD player and the burning down of universities.

Nothing serious

Go to facebook, read this on the MyBB account... A new report by Statistics SA shows that the young white population group in South Africa has declined substantially in recent years. [Via BusinessTech]
My question is "Are you freakin insane?"
Questions to consider to come back ... Are you white, If yes, stay away from this ****hole.
Do you like serivce delivery, if yes, stay away
Do you like to feel safe , if Yes, stay away
This country is ****ed, so don't come back. And listen to your mother. Go and look what made the news since the start of the year.
Are you planning to or do you have chiildren? there is no future for them here.
This country is ruled by people who are voted in by others who live in the field. Someone like that has the same say as to how the country should be run than a brain surgeon.

And those 3 combined don't come near the murder rate in SA. Not even official wars death rates come near.

If you've saved enough money or have investments, maybe in a strong foreign currency, South Africa can still be awesome, you can ignore the problems and live in luxury. Standard of living is really affordable.

Also, maybe consider that your mom does not want you back :D

There is plenty of violent crime that happens in your neck of the woods as well.

Don't make out that it is all rosy and wonderful...

Mainly if you are invested off-shore, local is not lekker, there is the Z-factor.

Yes it really is getting that bad. The brent crude oil price, as an example, have gone down from $120 to around $30 per barrel, but petrol has been going up instead of down. People burn down and strike nearly every day. Basic service delivery is only made when you threaten, yell, scream and bribe.

It really isn't a country I want to be a part of anymore, and I think most south africans feel the same way. It's the uneducated poor that will fall for the lies (manifesto in PE) from the ANC again.... it sucks.... don't come back yet

I was planning on relocating this year, but things really aren't that bad yet. I'm living cheaply, making way more than I could overseas, and worst case is I can fall back my UK passport in a hurry if the poo hits the fan.

If I didn't have a plan B, I'd be making one now, because when things go south, it's going to happen quickly.

Your mother is just being protective and coming from her vantage point of age, he argument makes sense. But bit of an overkill. South Africa is going through its transition years, and yes, at times it ain't pretty, but absolutely necessary. Come to realise, long ago...this is Africa, and no matter, how you try...she will not be tamed. You just to live with that fact, and deal with/love her. Having said that...government local and provincial, pretty much works in the Western Cape. As country we are clearly not where we suppose to be, but like I said transition years...you would be very naive if you thought, we would not have to shoulder this sort of crap, after 1994. - IMHO, we may just live to see a better country.

Oh wow....things sound really dismal in SA. :( Majority seem to think SA sucks. Guess I have to start looking at the Canada option again.... :(

In terms of crime, things are bad. I compare my self and my families experience compared to our family over in Canada. Since they moved there, 6-7 years ago, havent have any sort of criminal activity effect their lives. They still to this day, leave their front door unlocked, can leave their cars unlocked etc etc They havent been effected by crime at all.

Now with regards to myself, Ive had 2 cars stolen, been mugged twice (at knifepoint), housebroken 3 times, had my radio and other stuff stolen out of my early cars more times than I can recall. My sister has been held up at gunpoint twice, two cars stolen, couple house breakins. My wifes sister has had similar experiences...

Im sick of it, and dont want my daughter to experience this level of crime and have to constantly worry about her safety... no thanks... pay way too much money for insurance.

Oh and my wifes parents just bought a house over there, interest rate of 2.5%... go figure...

Only return when God returns and the anc steps down.....................................

Take whatever the Gautengers say with a pinch of salt

Miserable buggers they are

But can you blame them :D
