Is it really that bad in SA?

Does SA have it's problems, sure and a lot of the negative sentimentality you'll find in this thread just reinforces that.

Is SA really the shytehole some people on this thread believe it is? I don't think so, other countries also have their fair share of problems, some more than SA some less, however every time I travel to other countries I always love coming back to SA, haven't found a better place yet

My sister and family came back in 2012, regretted it, emigrated in 2014 again. They won't be back - ever. Quality of life, is more than just a pay cheque.
 
South Africa is good, although not the first choice for anyone for obvious reasons, but our prices aren't that bad for certain things here, especially food.

If I had the choice between somewhere else like Israel and SA I would choose Israel, not that I don't like SA, but certain things are making it less desirable and the job situation doesn't help also when starting a family.

My aunt came back, and she said he is not going back overseas. She said you work like a slave to maintain an expensive lifestyle. See, anecdotes are fun.
 
OP, I can tell you, everyone *I* know that has come back from Dubai, has loved it here.

All the people telling you that whites can't get employment, are white and employed.

There is a lot of **** in the country, but there is a lot of **** in every country. Your mom has good intentions but you DO have to leave Dubai, so there isn't many places you can really go. When you get here I am sure that you will have a great time, being close to family and seeing our beautiful country again. It takes a while to adjust and everyone is different, but give it a chance
 
I would not come back.

According to my many friends who now call it home, Australia is what South Africa could be if the people in charge actually gave a schit about the country, so I'd go there. Similar weather and lifestyles, less drama.

As with most things in life I think it all depends on your perspective.

I have lived and worked here my whole life. I really don't want to be here anymore. 3 years on, the hijacking still lives with me. I still shudder at the thought of what would have happened had I taken my son with me that night. Every month, every year I have to get more out of less. I live in a prison, with cameras and a fantastic security company just so I can sleep at night. I do not see a future for my white children and I hate the thought of them having to still apologize for things my parents' generation did. My perception of SA is sometimes very similar to your mothers.

Those are my reasons for not wanting to stay here, but others don't have them, and so they are happy. In all honesty they probably will continue like that for a long time. I sometimes wish I was one of them.

I guess my point is that everyone will take decisions based on their own history and experience, and that my reasons for doing something shouldn't really define your reasons for not - if that makes some sense?

At the end of the day one can only take the decision and live with it. That's the only real power we have in this world anyway.
 
I would not come back either.
Life here is pretty good, but I am really scared of getting old in this country. Cost of living is spiralling out of control. Medical care is either ridiculously expensive or really poor quality. Public transport is non-existent. Politically, we're on a knife-edge. It looks very much like we're heading for a dictatorship. Those in power don't give a toss about the constitution and there's nothing that can be done about it.

...no thank you, we will never be like Australia...we will be better! And you right, if a schit was given, by the ****ers in charge...we would be world beaters...
 
Do you have kids or do you plan to have them? If the answer is "yes" then stay out.

If you have enough foreign cash stored up to afford a fortress in an expensive neighbourhood you can make a nice lottle bubble for yourself if you can afford to ignore the beggers at every stop street, the constant petty crime (And worse.) and your tax money being stolen.

SA is pretty much finished as a civilized nation.

Ah man, this country breaks my heart. So many resources and opportunity.

But, we have a government that doesn't give a flying f#ck about anything other than themselves. And the sad thing is, the majority vote for them every election....then complain about the service - burn, destroy riot for a couple years. Come election time...they vote for the same party....rinse and repeat.

I am getting close to 36....and I am running out of time to have a long career overseas. I am married with two sons (4 and 8 months). I am looking at the Canada option but not so easy to get it in.

If I were you I would definitely NOT come back. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Its on your doorstep regardless and to say crime isn't a problem in SA is head-in-sand stuff. And it may not affect you directly but it blights the society you live in.

MICKEY, in australia you can still sleep with your door unlocked. There are places in the states still with that. Here, security is the largest employer of people with over a million staff. So for every 40 people there is someone employed in security.
