Is it worth getting a BB?

+1

i jus wana add to this

we have wifi on campus but its behind a proxy so my friends with BBs cant use it coz the BB cant configure proxies (none that i know of atleast) ...whereas my S2 can connect to a proxied wifi and u can manually configure the proxy.

I take you are talking about Wits and their ridiculous Wifi proxy?

Not the 8520. No browsing for over a month now. At 7 ill lose this connection. get an os7 and up. Think the 9320 has a fm radio as well.

Must downgrade this bis. Not getting all this famous free browsing I keep hearing about.

Yes, 9320 has FM radio, reason why I got it and not the 9360. Also has a flash for the camera and the camera is very good - a feature that sadly lacks in most modern phones.

Personally I'm waiting for the OS10 devices before I upgrade.

i agree BB users dont know what they missing out on....as far as iam concerned the only thing you can change on a BB's homescreen is the wallpaper but on android u can check the news, read ur fb twitter, make a call and much more right from ur homescreen .

Huh? On BB, you can change icon layout, wallpaper, theme (and the themes have a huge amount of flexibility, up to and including displaying live weather etc.), and so on. I dunno what you mean about making a call direct from the homescreen; any BB has speed dial - press and hold a letter to dial a pre-set number.

Blackberry is still great... just don't get a cheap one and don't use Vodacom.

Any other type of phone and you will spend a fortune on data...

The cheap droids are rubbish, no cheap iphones, so unless you willing to spend serious money on a phone and data just get a BB.

Personally I was shocked how clunky and impracticable BBs are to use compared to my Android. The native Facebook app is laughable on the 8520.

Thanks. I know that most people develop apps for Andoid and iOS. I also know that I can get data from Cell C, 500MB for R75 (I think, I'm not sure) I do not use more than 200Mb on my current phone (Nokia 5800 XpressMusic). Does BB have a large app store, almost the size of the Android App store? I'm going to get a new phone next year, between R2000 - R3600 on prepaid or contract. The Samsung Galaxy S2 looks good and its priced good too.

I have a few friends, who have left BB, they say that its not so awesome anymore. They left it for Android and iOS (iPhone 4S).

exactly....u dont know what you are missing out on..jus looking at my own S2 homescreen i can read updates from my rss subscribed sites...view active apps ..write down notes...turn on the flash...start wifi/ usb tether ..scroll through my emails..etc etc... and the best u could come up with is icon layout theme and wallpaper..

+1 you have to try out another platform to understand how far behind BBs are

if u only use 200mb then their is no point in getting a BB

As for their app store its not nearly as big as android and ios

i have an S2 bought it 10 months ago...believe me u wont regret the experience

Yes, I would go for a month to month TopUp contract with CellC and add on a 500MB. You will inevitably use more data than you are currently. BB app store has *considerably* less apps than Android/iPhone.

I have the S2 - you can get it on the cheap now. Go for it. Be prepared to charge your battery every day though, its big change of habits if you're coming from an older phone.

My phone has a spell checker. :D

On my phone: one click to view running apps. On click to toggle wifi. One click to switch to 2G (or back to 3G). One click to load any of a dozen or more apps. One click to see RSS feeds, Twitter, and Facebook in a single place. Two clicks for a flash (I don't use it often). One click to see messages from 4 email accounts, Facebook, BBM, Google Talk, and Twitter, all in one place.

I like my wallpapers, so I don't clutter the screen up; only four icons on screen. My wallpaper changes every 10 minutes from a pool of 300-odd.

Thanks guys, I think I will rather get the Samsung Galaxy S2. How much is it on contract at 8ta, Cell C and MTN?

Good choice. I pay R280pm for Galaxy S2 with CellC. 300MB data included and 100 free minutes. I see they don't have this deal anymore but have one for R249pm which includes 50MB data + 50 free minutes.

EDIT: Best to go to the store and see what suits you.

MTN has the SGS2 for R189/month on an Anytime 100 (R100 airtime) contract. You also get 150MB and 25sms/month.

Its the best deal so far and it ends next week Wednesday.

And the said airtime cannot be used for data? I stand to be corrected though... haven't touched them in years!

No, you can use the airtime for data which is horridly expensive.
