Hi,

So most of my friends and some family use Blackberry (Blackberry 8520 Curve) and BBM. I know all about BB, that you get uncapped internet on the phone for R59 per month.

I'm stuck whether I should get a blackberry or not. Here are Pro's and Con's I thought of:

PRO'S:

- BBM
- Unlimited Internet (on phone only).

CON's:

- BIS frequently down and slow (I heard)
- BB not so popular globally.
- Some of my friends say the Blackberry 8520 Curve conks out on BBM sometimes.

So I want to hear from y'all, is it worth getting a blackberry or not and why?

Thanks.

Not worth it. Go Android. Whats your price range so I can find you a really nice andoid phone.

BB's break really easy and you don't even have to do anything to break them.

Don't get an 8520, hardware can't keep up anymore with latest software and apps.
Get one with a warranty just in case something goes wrong then you are covered.

If you've got friends and family with BB's then get a BB, its better than WhatsApp. And if you use your internet on your phone then the R59pm is a blessing.

PS. Not everyone understands this so ask your friends that are on BB and see whether they convince you or not.

cellc : 15cents per mb ...60/0.15 = 400 mb ...good speeds and can use on phone /pc basically whichever device u put the sim in...call rates are better.
thats network and BIS

now for phone

whatsapp maybe not as good as BBM but serves its purpose well and multi platform.
then there is also viber which doesnt offer voice on BB yet.
BBs dont offer much customisation either whereas an android offers a huge amount of customisation.

finally OS
BB will be releasing their new OS soon so old phones are not going to get much attention and support.

personally
alot of my friends have BBs and they always get software issues after a year or so.
and all of them use whatsapp as well

conclusion
if ur main points are BBM and BIS ..then a BB is not worth it. i suggest an android ...samsung

If you get a BB, enjoy the phone freezing every now and then.
I once struggle to connect to WiFi in a mall, My wife's [BB] comment were, first time I hear that you struggle with with your android phone.

If you just want to bbm and just bbm, go BB.

I also only got a BB because 95% of people I know have them = bbm, but think in coming years almost everyone going to move to android and thus whatsapp, bbm very nice(when it works) and waaaay better than whatsapp, if whatsapp can improve a bit it's a no brainer, go android!

My 2c..

IMO whatsapp is horrible on the blackberry, but is great on other smartphones like android and iphone.

if you have to get a BB I suggest you wait a few months because the new BB will be out and SA should be one of the first markets that receive them.

Agree on 8520 being a piece of junk and bad user experience of the BIS eco system. I just upgraded the wife from an 8520 two weeks ago to a 9320 and its a big improvment. She can enjoy her BB again.

So unless your getting a newer BB (with OS 7), don't bother.

U can't get the anymore as far as I know as they have been discontinued which is what I had. I am hoping I can get a completely diff model. I got a BB simply that I dont have to have air time on my phone to chat and go on FB etc. Yes they do have faults but the free chatting is awesome

Get a 'droid on Cellc with a data contract. I guarantee you'll have a much more awesome time with it than a blackberry.

My son has the 8520...we both agree it's a piece of crap. I've already spent R 500 for repairs even though it was still under warranty. Still don't know why Vodacom rejected it. Yes, half the time BBM doesn't work on the 8520. He has the 9320 now though, so no complains yet...for myself, no I wouldn't get a blackberry.

Isn't it ironic that the Blackberry went from THE business phone to a teenybopper phone? :wtf:

Mr.CookieMonster, rather get yourself a proper phone, like a Samsung Galaxy S2. It can be had for R3598 cash from 8ta (which is a fantastic bargain), or R189 on MTN per month (which is even a better deal).

- Unlimited Internet (on phone only).

Can any1 explain WHY (technically) we cannot access this from on our pc's (ie: Free)?
How is it detected and prevented?

:wtf: Is It MAC Filtering?

Not MAC Filtering, definitely not. When you tether your phone to the PC it accesses the internet on the regular internet APN, whereas on device it uses the blackberry APN. I am sure someone can, and will probably, correct me.

i jus wana add to this

we have wifi on campus but its behind a proxy so my friends with BBs cant use it coz the BB cant configure proxies (none that i know of atleast) ...whereas my S2 can connect to a proxied wifi and u can manually configure the proxy.

This.

Probably because it is virtually impossible to dev a decent app for BB. I honestly think BB users do not have a clue what they're missing out on.

i agree BB users dont know what they missing out on....as far as iam concerned the only thing you can change on a BB's homescreen is the wallpaper but on android u can check the news, read ur fb twitter, make a call and much more right from ur homescreen .
