I am planning to get ASDL, need line installed etc. While trying to order on the telkom website I get a message that says :"Maximum speed that your cable network supports is 1Mbps"

Now I am happy with the speed but since this will be a best effort service (as I understand it) will I actually see the decent speeds? It will mostly be used for downloading (not heavy), VPN into work and surfing.

Also, im sure I saw my area on the list for the 20 and 40 Mbpps VDSL. Why is it then that I can only get 1Mbpps line speed? Surely we should be able to get 4 or 10 meg lines? Is it possible that our exchange is too busy?

Am I correct in saying that it will cost me R329 for the ADSL line renal and uncapped and another R149 for the voice line rental (which Ill never use)?

Hope these arent n00b questions.

Another question, how will a VPN connection perform over ADSL sv CellC 3G? I want to move away from 3G because I find that often my modem shows im connected but zero data is coming in.

In what area are you located?

Perhaps it was meant only on the package you selected, you would get 1Mbps.

It is difficult to compare 1Mbps ADSL to, say 7.2Mbps Cell C or even higher. With wireless comes latency issues that could effect your VPN.

ADSL is for stability and volume. Works out to <R2/GB for me, which is great. If you reckon you'll use less than about 10-20GB, ADSL loses some of it's appeal...

1MB is fine for remote work, RDP, teamviewer etc. Just can't stream HD video.

I have 1Mb ADSL from Telkom capped at 5 GB international + 5Gb local. Regular speedtests show speeds between 0.8 and 1Mb.
Costs me R317 incl vat for EVERYTHING. Uses it for VPN to work in evenings as well as downloading and surfing.

Going uncapped soon at R329

definitely worth it. you'll enjoy the internet much more but be sure to get a wifi router.

Yes, its worth it. Get uncapped adsl with a wifi modem and router and you cant go wrong.

Ok great, I was a bit worried about our exchange but lets see what telkom comes back with. Good to know that 1MB will be enough for remote work, I tend to live at work and work at home.

@McGuywer:I am in sunward park in boksburg.

I have an ASUS rt-n56-u and I will use a Billion BiPAC 5200 for the ADSL.

Thanks for all the replies.

Just an update.

The Good: I applied online for the line on Wed last week. They phoned me on Thursday to set up an appointment for Tuesday (cant believe its that quick).
The bad: Telkom want to charge me an aditional R700 for the ADSL install, I can do it myself, I have before.
The ugly: Since this is a new line install they tried to force me to pay the R700 for the ADSL install (I really dont get this). So now they will only install the line and I will apply for the ADSL line separately. They can get stuffed. How can they say I MUST pay the R700 for the telkom techie to plug a cable into my router. Not a chance.

You could have avoided installation costs if you had ordered a Closer package.

You sure it's not just the deposit amount you must put down. I had to put down a R700 deposit because they didn't like my credit rating at the time.

Nope, I am forced to pay for the ADSL installation.

Just some feedback:

Just some feedback, I signed up for a free 5 GB from imaginet upon discovering the ADSL light burning on my router and burned through that 5 GB very quickly. Signed up for an Openweb Gold account and enjoyed pure awesomeness, thanks mrBeep :)

I am extremely impressed with Telkom. Heres why:
- My phone line was installed in under a week (ordered on Wednesday (30 Jan), installed following Tuesday (5 Feb))
- The line installation took just under two hours, they had to find the box in the complex first. The techies gave me a call, set up a meeting and was on time.
- Ordered ADSL on Wednesday (6 Feb), online and running Thursday evening 7 Feb.

Cant believe that I am saying this but lets give credit where it is due: THANKS Telkom.

Yes it is...
I have fibre where I live, unfortunately its a fly-by-night FISP, so I have to use ADSL.
