Since I recently received my monthly invoice for next months 2gb/28gb IS account and taking into account all the reports of a severely degraded service I find myself asking the above question.

Would the same money not be better spent on a 10gb SAIX local account?

EDIT - for the sake of argument lets say I'm wanting to use the bandwidth to supplement my television viewing experience ;)

You're basically sacrificing 20 gigs for some extra speed. And those 10 gigs fly really quickly, but if you really can't wait then ^speed is what you need^.

I would say it could be worth it if you can't even get close to finishing the 30gb local due to severely degraded service. Then I'd say, go for it!

I'd rather stick with slow IS and have 3 times the amount of Gigs than have the speed using SAIX.

you CAN use up your 30 gigs in a month..... it just takes the whole month .lol. And you'd have to be downloading constantly.....

And even though ADSL is always on internet it was never really meant to be always downloading because you are not getting full line speed.

EDIT: I wonder if this all has to do with the imminent plans to no longer have local traffic count towards the cap.

I think I'll try SAIX for the month and see how things go.

Although the fact that I can update my Debian and Fedora installs of local servers does mean that the IS local only account still has great value to me.

not sure bwana... it seems that nowadays it comes down to choosing a lesser evil out of the lot and *just* accepting it :/

I used to use up 2 x 30 GIG accounts every month for as long as I can remember. This month for the first time I only signed up for 1 x 30 GIG account. And of that I have only used 20 GIGs this month so far.

So to answer .... "IS it worth it anymore?" .... NO.

Just curious.

There's plenty of people here who must have downloaded 270+ gigs of "stuff" just this year.

Where do u store it, and do u ever "use/watch" it?

Is it just a case of collecting stuff because u can?

If you think about it that would only be the equivalent of roughly 2 hours of shows per day. :)

I've used one 3/27 IS account this month and I'm half way through a second. But I also have 10Gb SAIX Int and 20Gb SAIX local which, compared to the frustration of using IS's dysfunctional bandwidth, is a real pleasure. I've downgraded to two 2/28 IS accounts for next month. But unless things improve, I may drop one and get more SAIX local instead.

If IS really want to avoid a mass exodus from their products, they know what they have to do.

one thiong i've found being on a 4mb line is that on international torrents i can keep the leakage to less than 10% by limiting upload speed. If 30GB cap was priced reasonably, I wouldn't mind losing 3GB to uploading. And of course the whole 30GB would not be used against torrents. Oh but one can only dream.

the R999 30G all round access from openweb was nice, but it always 10-15G's short ;)

bwana - a poll with few listed service which one most worth it or a compare of sort ?

Most worth it ever in terms of SA internet were the R200 30GB accounts of the past.

It's weird that we have to aspire to the past in an industry that naturally moves forward (well in other countries).

what was the adsl rental costs like at the time?

Can't remember - think I was paying around R350-R400 (somewhere around there) for a 384kbps line (which actually went at 512kbps speeds due to being allowed to sync higher).
