Is it worth upgrading

Is it really worth it ? the longevity of these drives is all thats keeping me back ... almost like a hamsters life :P

never had any issues with samsung drives, still got my 80 gig ide in perfect condition ^^,

They have at least 5000 writes per sector, most are 10k+. So for installing programs and then leaving them there, it really isnt an issue

SSD's have a longer life expectancy than normal HDDs.

what about the amount of writes ? ive read that hibernation can also rip through a ssd ? not sure why though (not really interested in storage that much but its getting more interesting as the investigation goes on now)

thanks for answering, what other issues are there ? if i understand correctly we are still on a learning curve with these drives, which will only get better as time goes on.... like the raptors as an example of mechanical drive... ah what a beauty

If you think raptors are good, ssd will blow your mind. I used to run raid 0 then raid raptors and now ssd and a raptor is slow compared to the ssd.

All hardware can have their issues. Look at all those seagate hdd's that fail awhile back.

SSD makes EVERYTHING faster. Not just windows booting.

+1. I turn my pc on and off once a day, booting is normally least of my worries.

However, for the instant application loads, application shut downs, lightening fast installs, it really is worth it.

Office (outlook, excel, word) load instantly every time, even directly after boot, Opera loads instantly, and all those small windows apps (taskmgr, calc, paint) obviously load instantly, it's as if they're all just minimized in the task bar, and you're just restoring them!

Shutdown is also very fast, even if you have 20 apps open, it shuts down as fast as though no apps were running.

I mentioned before, I used my SSD for a month in my old desktop before I got my new desktop.. And when I went back to the 7200rpm drive, it was like using a win 95 pc! I felt like I'd been landed in the stone age again, on my grandma's old desktop.

And whenever I use my macbook pro, it is also painfully slow when it comes to loading apps and documents, when compared to macbook air which has lesser specs, yet SSD by default.

End rant / what can I say, SSD is one of the best PC investments I've ever made...

The general consensus then seems to be, spend my money on an SSD and a new GFX card?

Any comments on the mobo itself....

You don't need a new MOBO or GFX card. Unless you're gaming on 2560*1440.

Get a OCZ Vertex 3 120gig SSD or maybe a Samsung 40D550.

Those will make you feel much better about your purchase.

It wasnt that I want a new mobo, I just wanted to get opinions on my current one.

If there aren't features you find missing, it's perfectly fine. It's almost like you're looking for ways to waste money.

Ha ha. The opposite in fact. I dont know a lot about hardware but I always try to have a balanced system. I dont want one part to be a bottleneck, ie I upgrade gfx but the board is not 'fast' enough to fully support it.

Our am I worried about a problem that doesn't actually exist?

Hence ask the questions. I have saved some cash and I'd like to make the best upgrade decision for the next 6-12 months.
