I need some advice/opinions from the community

I currently have :

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 - Black Edition CPU - 3.4Ghz Socket AM3
EVGA nVidia GeForce Graphics Card GTX460 Super Clocked - 768MB 192Bit GDDR5
Gigabyte 880GM-D2H – Socket AM3 Motherboard

with :

Mushkin PC3-12800 DDR3 8GB Silverline Low-Voltage 2x4GB

Thinking of upgrading to

Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3 Motherboard - Socket 1155
MSI AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB OC Edition MSI AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB OC Edition
Intel Boxed Core i5 2500K Processor - 3.30GHz Quad Core Socket 1155

with the same memory.

Will the R6000 its going to cost me really make that much difference to my overall experience.

Mainly used for gaming.

What a waste of money it will be. There's no reason to upgrade at all. Rather use that cash to get a Samsung 46D550.

You'll thank me later.

Your vga could use an upgrade but other than that it all looks good to me. If you don't mind gaming on medium/low then don't waste money.

He won't be gaming anywhere near low on his current setup. I use a 955 and 5770 and don't go anywhere near low.

Thanks for the replies, its what I suspected.

According to various internet sources, the improvement gain will be minimal, but I like to get user opinions as well.

I'll probably just save up and buy a new, decent rig and the end of the year.

Dont waste your money. R6000 should see some substantial difference - but it doesnt show.

CPU: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/102?vs=288
No ways the increase is worthwhile, especially wrt to gaming.

GPU: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...850-vs-gtx-460-1gb-overclocking-study-10.html
You might see a 5 - 10 FPS difference. If I were you, id just OC if you really need to.

If anything, wait until next year. With Ivy bridge coming out as well as ATI 7000 series, your R6k should be worth a lot more in terms of performance.

True, medium to high settings, depending on the game. never bother with ultra high settings, no game is worth spending the cash on the hardware that requires.

Thanks, good to know.

Ya don't waste your cash.. You could pick up a second hand 570 if 6950/70 if you want the extra fps boost..
An SSD could be an option for general responsiveness increases..

Yes its worth the upgrade.

I rate you upgrade. If your budget can strech for i7 Sandy Bridge then get one.

AMD is the last option for an upgrade (only get if literally all the Intel Chips run out)

Why exactly would upgrading be worthwhile? Everyone else here says dont upgrade, so what are we missing? Evidence please?

+1 - Don't upgrade, at least, not this year.

If you want to upgrade, definitely get an SSD, it is a major upgrade for overall system responsiveness.

If your mobo supports SLI, then I'd get another GPU.

Also if you want a big CPU upgrade, wait for Ivy Bridge (which may be expensive though)

I think 2500K and 2600K will not perform much better for most games. Therefore don't do it....

However if you want to do heavy multi-tasking (rendering etc) then go for the 2600K or rather wait for Ivy Bridge.

Do not get the 6870s in crossfire. They have huge micro stuttering issues.
There's nothing wrong with your current cpu. It will give you the exact fps in gaming than a 2600k would. All you can do is stuck a Gtx 580 in there or a 6970. That's all

I wouldn't upgrade that, personally. If you really won't miss the cash, then perhaps get a decent SSD (120Gb should do), although I still doubt it will improve the actual gaming experience. I'd probably also go for a spiffy LCD (or 2) :D
