Is my system bottlenecked?

Will my system bottleneck with a 5970

MSI p45 plat
4GB DDRII 1066
Q9450 running at 3.2GHz
don't worry about other things.

I was thinking of getting myself a 5970.

Yes. 5970 is another level of ridiculousness. Don't bother if you don't have a 30" display or better (eyefinity?). You won't see the difference over say, a 5850.

What graphics do you have currently?

Sounds perfect. No you have to get DDR3.

Dang, so this is going to be pricer than I thought

SSD would be nice, but yeah just a little pricey. If you got a SSD drive though, would you just run you OS off it, I mean lets say you got a 40GB SD you woulnt have much space for games or apps.

Yeah unfortunately when making a vast upgrade to one component usually means the rest have to follow suite.

I think I have my head set on the I5 750 and the Asus P7P55D. If anyone can suggest a better mix I am all ears, within reason of course :D

One question though will my current DDRII ram work on this board for now? Will upgrade to DD3 ram next month.

Personally I think the AMD Phenom2 965 Black Edition is a better deal... each to their own I suppose

If you playing games a 40gb is gonna fail hard

I got a 128GB and its a tight squeeze, but I like to keep about 30GB free at all times... Runs quicker!

well i dont fill the SSD up to the brim, i only install my windows, apps and 1 game at a time, so im left with 10 - 15gigs. If its emulator games then i keep it on another drive, but the point is, dont fill your SSD, to its max and it wont fail on you.

Basic rules:

5850/5870 - you'll need to OC your quad core (Q9**0+) to 3.6GHz+ or get an I5 750, and upwards.

5970 - I5 750 / I7 920, and maybe even OC them a bit.

Game depending of course, I stand to be corrected.

Yes it's just as fast or faster than the Intel Core i5 750, but the Intel can overclock higher.

Prefer Intel personally. Although cost wise AMD Is better?

Yeah 40GB aint going very far.

But if you run OS on the SSD and the rest off a normal sata drive, I guess that doesnt really help all that much hey?

nope! :p

HDD is generally the slowest component... so running the OS off the SSD, and then installing the game to a SATA isnt gonna do sqwat! :)

Well, OS, apps and the 1 game i was talking about, everything else that you don't need the speed for can be offloaded onto your other drives. That's what i meant. If i am going to play a game that needs a lot of resources then i am definitely going to play it from my SSD, other than that, if not, it doesn't deserve to be on the SSD.

Catch my drift?

Got ya ;)

Makes perfect sense.

everything deserves to be on a SSD

Yup i agree but honestly once you are in game the SSD is worthless. SSD is only if you have spare cash. You only want the ssd if you have the spare cash, it is not really the be all and end of all of a gaming rig and i would say a gaming rig would not run better off a ssd in terms of gameplay. Sure windows will load fast and the games slightly faster but the actual game will not make use of the ssd. I may be mistaken though of course :D.

SSD = spare cash for gaming rig or for a work computer. Cpu and vga far more important than ssd. 40gb ssd is worthless for gaming, couple games and it's full.

Well then you really won't see much difference until you bump up the resolution to above 2560x1600.

thanks. So I will thus save some moeny like 10 - 15grand and put it aside for my next rig when this one gets old
