I'm finding that increasing connections increases the speed for a few minutes then it starts dying down again :/Starting to find i have to make more and more connections to everything(http, news server) to get past 1.5mbit speeds... :/
At least when it does maxout for 10mins, its like 200mb downloaded... I wouldnt mind paying for a high quality local news server.
Yea i was actually wondering whether IS are purposely just letting the news server run dry. I mean compared to the price for each 30gigs local we are paying for and the 30gigs international the news server has to download... Surely it is not worth their effort to maintain it?
One thing ive found while having nothing to do with news server dying, is that locally we have jack **** to look at. Sitting on my local account and in 5mins ive run out of stuff to look at. Tried looking through local search engines, cannot find anything worthwhile to look at... Think we need a www.i-am-bored.co.za if only local bandwidth wasnt so f'n expensive, would love to put up some good local content...
SAIX news server is totally useless in terms of content and retention.
To test this try a full update on the grouplist on an SAIX server, it updates in 2 minutes at full speed. The IS server updates in 10+ minutes at full speed. Well on 384 anyway. That gives some indication on the content.
Dont bother with uunet's news server - it's a waste of time. SAIX's is better.*EDIT: news.uunet.co.za -> what account do i have to get auth with that one?
