IS News Server down?

Starting to find i have to make more and more connections to everything(http, news server) to get past 1.5mbit speeds... :/

Servers have been really dodge the last 2 days. Works cool for 1 week then takes a breather for 1 week, then works for 1 week and takes another breather... Wish we could have paid servers. If IS could setup a few servers with a certain amount of users on each with authentication then i recon we'd max the servers 24/7/365...

Question, have you guys found IS international, extremely terrible. just downloading at the moment from various int sites at 30kb/s.... worse than when i had my 384? Are 4mbit users getting slower speeds on IS than the 384 and 512 users?

I'm finding that increasing connections increases the speed for a few minutes then it starts dying down again :/

At least when it does maxout for 10mins, its like 200mb downloaded... I wouldnt mind paying for a high quality local news server.

There was a thread open a few weeks ago about the possibility of an `enhanced' IS news server being set up (pay extra => get better service). Mostly shot down in flames (IS would just degrade the `free' version till everyone coughed up for the non-free version). Also don't know if there is the critical mass necc. for this to be a viable business for someone (you do need to consume a *huge* ammount of bandwidth to keep a news server up to date, and bandwidth is kinda expensive round here).

Yea i was actually wondering whether IS are purposely just letting the news server run dry. I mean compared to the price for each 30gigs local we are paying for and the 30gigs international the news server has to download... Surely it is not worth their effort to maintain it?

IS basically owns its own bandwidth. I have no problem with paying for a news server. I think we need to create a new thread ("Paid IS News Server Petition") to see how many users would pay...? Then maybe get RPM or MrBeep to forward to IS or something cos it seems they dont read these forums...

Well I had my 3gig IS + openbrowse until found webafrica and routesentry, so droppd to IS local only for news server, so willing to pay the difference to get some quality downloading done, seeing though i did just upgrade to f'n 4mbit... Friends just buy me 30gig local accnts and tellme what they want ;) lol

By `run dry' do you mean allowing them to become so overloaded that we get (checks NetMeter) 2.7KB/s download speeds? That might be their strategy to keep all those no-good leechers (um, like, us :) ) at bay. But then why offer 30GB local accts? Turkeys.

The one amazing thing about the IS news servers though is their retention: in many cases about 70 days (which is better than most int'l pay servers). In that sense they are not allowing their servers to run dry.

One thing ive found while having nothing to do with news server dying, is that locally we have jack **** to look at. Sitting on my local account and in 5mins ive run out of stuff to look at. Tried looking through local search engines, cannot find anything worthwhile to look at... Think we need a www.i-am-bored.co.za if only local bandwidth wasnt so f'n expensive, would love to put up some good local content...

*EDIT: anyone know what the saix news server has been like lately? Tried to connect but askd for authorisation...

*EDIT: news.uunet.co.za -> what account do i have to get auth with that one?

Yes, true; again bandwidth costs; no point in people putting up huge media files when almost no one has the bandwidth to download them. A local cache of youTube might be a nice way of wasting time....

SAIX news server is totally useless in terms of content and retention.

To test this try a full update on the grouplist on an SAIX server, it updates in 2 minutes at full speed. The IS server updates in 10+ minutes at full speed. Well on 384 anyway. That gives some indication on the content.

Well, make like a blog site, when you watch a youtube video you upload it to incomin on uunet ftp or something like that and give the link...How often do they clear those incoming folders? I mean, i watchd 200mb of youtube videos earlier, would save hell of a lot of int bandwidth, SAIX is damn fast on 4mbit, was awesome streaming...

More than that, even in the groups that are there, virtually very post is incomplete. Totally pointless for the binary groups.

My last statement of the night: A local giganews(IS was like that though) *dreams sweet beautiful downloading leeching dreams*

*EDIT: i can remember the days in december,no1 even knew about news server, ahhh the downloading i did on my lil 192k

Dont bother with uunet's news server - it's a waste of time. SAIX's is better.

im not evening getting 0.000001kb/s. Gone are the days of downloading from news server, guess have to go torrents or dc++ :(

i downloaded last night, had 9 files left and it just stopped after 4 downloaded. need 5 files to complete my download, now suddenly the articles are missing

I wonder if its the problems that IS have been having with international that the news servers are unable to get the articles off the giganews servers?
