IS News Server down?

It is kinda wierd that things went wonky with the box almost the same weekend as the 4 mb lines started appearing?!?
I am still confused as to why it always goes belly up on the weekend - but guess that could be answered by the increased usage on the weekend possibly?
I do agree with one of the posts about 300 :) back, at least let us know whats going on, seeing the 10000 approximate views of the topic, there is more than a couple of us that care.....
Question is how long before another one rocks up, seems that an isp could be selling accounts with access to only their news server and they would be rolling in the dosh, and IS I guess would be really bummed then :)
 
The problme is that you'd still need to pay for bandwidth from a datacentre and it's not cheap. To provide a pay news server in SA if you don't own the datacentre in next to impossible. To host a server in one of IS's datacentres you would be paying R90/gb for any traffic to the server. Now I doubt anyone is going to pay even close to that price for the transfer and that's not even including the server's rental or for co-location the rack space. So they damn well make sure that no one else can get a news server running ;)

With what some people are getting from the server it's suprising that they don't just stop it. I also can't see how it would take a week to upgrade a server, nvm 2 weeks or a month. They have either started upgrading the server and will be finished tommorrow or they haven't started, but will do so in the near future, IOW it's imminent. None of this, you might experience slower speeds while we upgrade the server for the next 2 months.

So we are quite lucky to have such a server at no extra charge on their accounts, especially in SA. I'm not saying that it's acceptable though that they are giving us crap speeds because they say they're gonna upgrade it.

I love the first day of the month, everyone is looking after there international bandwith, so I get to max out my line with my local only account :)

hopefully next month il get one of these...:)...can start downloading from day 1 and dont have to worry bout finishing your international cap etc
 
what have the speeds for the 1mbit guys been like so far?
 
does anyone have ANY clue when the server "upgrade" is going to be complete. Mr Beep is still silent!
 
LoL Mines running at full speed but it stil seems that some files are dead... Kinda irritating... cuz im missing like an ep in a series... 1, 2, 4 WeoWeo!!!

LoL ye i got cherp'd @ by MRbeep about this... Ill tell u what he told me, he said all that IS has told him is that they are upgrading there servers... somthing like that :P
 
Is seems to be having problems, if the aliens are'nt messing with their satelites, their tampering with the news servers :D

killadoob I'm not sure what you're asking...which news reader are you using?

Please avoid M$'s crappy Outlook cos that only reads text and images. Try and get hold of Newsbin or Grabit, they auto-decode files into their correct format instead of reading them as text. But first you need to search for the .NZB files on a usenet search engine (eg. newzleech.com, binsearch.info etc.) and save the .NZB file then import that file into your reader.

Have you looked in your cache folder ? See if there are a bunch of text files that are a few MB's. Then use yenc to encode them to RAR files ???
 
Im not using Grabbit, with Newbin im getting 200k but no files at all are comming down, just using megs for nothing
 
grabit is the best ive used man

sign up to grabit for 5 .8 dolla for 3 months and search within grabit

way better
