Odd, my uncached speed has increased from 8-10 to roughly 17-19 since yesterday. Perhaps there was a reason for the downtime..upgrade?

Far as leeching.. I don't often download cached items, besides for a tv series or two. There are a lot of items available on the newserver that aren't available anywhere else - not even the hallowed torrent. Had I international, I'd still be hitting newservers. Trundling along at uncached speeds, I still manage to get capped each month on my IS account.

lol - I think there are quite a few of us that do that. The 2gb loyalty bonus taunts me on a monthly basis - I dont even bother with the survey anymore.

I'm depressed by the number of rolled over gigs I have (and it grows every month).

Hmmm. I've also noticed that my uncached speeds have gone up into the 18 KBps range

Is it jis me or is news server really slow with cached stuff recently... avg about 220k on a 4mb line

Well, I tried caching a file, then re-downloading it, and it still was not cached. WTF is going on with the newsserver lately? I'm not getting cached speeds on anything at all!

i also think it might be a case of the server not always able to keep up/capacity problems?

lets take 4mb users for example

@max speed
1user = 400kb/sec
10users=~4000kb/sec
100users=~40000kb/sec
1000users=~400000kb/sec

i'd like to see ONE pc giving a constant speed like that.

there was someone a few months ago saying IS had allocated 40megabit in total...so doesn't cover a lot....

so its capacity problems it looks to me

I dont think it really is a capacity problem.

The reason I say this, is that all content that is already cached is downloading at full speed, eg 400K.

I think it is more a problem with it not caching.

Yup old content is still cached its just new stuff thats not caching.. Thats why i am not using it no more.. To slow for my liking.

only crap thing is that using torrents uses up double the bandwidth, eg 350meg download, and the 350meg upload to keep ratio up

News server has been really bad of late, nothing seems to be getting cached, and anything that is cached is broken. The rest of it comes at around 4kb/s.

It seems a general problem with services at IS, cause their ftp has been down for a while now. I think IS should bring out a paid News Service, considering in the future, we will finally have uncapped local (im talking distant future), which would make the current news service impossible to use.

That way, if you don't want to pay, use the normal service, otherwise, they can use that money to create a better, (faster, more retention, and mirror one of the top news hosters like giganews) offering.
