IS or SAIX ISP???

Strange. UCT has a bigger international link than Stellenbosch and bigger backbone overall...

huh, I feel sorry for you. Our link is pathetic most of the day, well, when the com labs are full.

They recently had some problem with the SAIX link being cancelled and we were on a smaller backbone for a while, not sure where that all went though, but it's still worse than dial-up during peak time.

The pings are good, but browsing is terrible.

Strange. The internet is always fine at sun. The more popular sites is a bit slower (Google.com & Google.co.za) or useless (Facebook), but I stay away from those (Facebook) or use alternatives (Google.co.uk / Private Proxy) :D

When was this little "problem" with the SAIX line?

I suppose term is over so the tertiary line should be almost unused,
Thats what I figured, so I went to the labs at Tuks, and the downloads were cruising at an unbelievable 7KB/s with the labs at 10% capacity. Myadsl timed out. Damn useless IT dept.

You guys are using just about 30% of the backbone. Surfing should be plain sailing :)

Where did you get that number from? Maybe the admins are leeching torrents, cause I've not seen anything above 10KB/s for the last few months. Oh, and all the CRTs are set to 60Hz and we are charged R1/meg. lolz

The backbone (ALL) is running at 30%- that includes the leeching admins.

:p @ Telkom

We get 200MB a month, which is enough for me, living at home. Not sure what they charge after that though.

Ld, they had some report about the satellite link we used to have from Telkom (pretty confusing) being replaced with a smaller line. I'm sure it's sorted out now, but sites like MyADSL (most local sites) will take forever to load, international seems better but still very slow. Downloads basically don't come down, 1-2Kb/s.

Thats why I asked "When was this little "problem" with the SAIX line?"... :p

1/2/3/99 Months ago?

wtf. We get 200MB per Year! While paying R400 for the privilege to use the messed up IT computers. Thereafter R1/meg.

Something is seriously wrong there. If it's a 15696kbps link, almost all the labs are closed for the day and I get 7KB/s (56kbps), then someone is leeching big time. I think I need to shout at someone.

Thanks for all the replies and help on the topic... I appreciate it a lot. :) :D

But it looks like the RAU network doesn't allow any downloading, even youtube.com is block.

No chances on torrents, news servers or simple bear share.
We don't pay for the internet, but there is no downloading allowed. :(
