Ok excuse my ignorance here, but this is not IS or SAIX traceroute test...

196.41.30.1 = datapro router, and from there on it follows their own international bandwidth...

Now let me say this, in my experience they (datapro) always had excelent international bandwidth, other than that, I don't really want to go into what their service and ideas are like...


As for VOIP over SAIX vs IS.

I am going to agree with clipse here on his SAIX=0 IS=10.

Just how can Satellite bw be better than SAT3 cable bw?
1. SAIX SAT3 heavily shaped..overused...
2. IS Satellite currently unshaped...not overused...

So what if the one takes 300-400ms longer to reach you, thats what half a second? Oh no that must be the end of the world when you talk to another person!


My experience. I play world of warcraft on the US servers. My guild is Teamspeak2 as a means of VOIP and have many people talk to each other at the same time, keep in mind, we are 40 players in a channel vs 2 people on skype...

On SAIX:
I would here pieces of talk, it would stutter, break up.
At the end of the day I missed the message.

On IS:
The message would come 400ms later (woohoo too bad) BUT it would come through clean, stutter free, smooth with better quality than my land line phone.
At the end of the day, I recieved the message and could cooperate in the game in guild tactics and have fun problem free...



Ok no mathematics. But what would you take?
Shaped SAT3 vs Unshaped Sattelite?
No question about it, I will much rather take the unshaped sat, simply because I can get the full bandwidth with normal data flow...

Dont believe me? Go try download a file via Mirc from a international peer, and tell me which one downloads faster without interruptions.


Oh and the best of all....
IS have a usenet server, with which you can download off from files up to 34 days old! Yes its free and you can use a whole 30gb on that without any problems! Ofcoarse you need to know how to use it first...but its kinda like easynews...

I think you have just sold me on IS. Is this news server accessible through all their resellers?

news.is.co.za <--- easy address to remember.

the application i use though, called Grabit. As long as you are on a IS ip, you can use it, that includes sentech users, ISadsl, even IS 56k resold accounts ect.
 
Thanks Tinuva. Have been using Agent for years and years, but will certainly look at Grabit once I have got onto IS. I have been looking for an NNTP server in SA with decent retention rates for ages. SAIX/Telkom's is a pile of p1ss!

Just hope that their International breakdown like last night does not become the norm -- anybody actually knows what went wrong. I see that IS usage stats has not been updated in the last couple days either.
 
Grabit is really nice, unfortunatly you have to pay a monthly fee to use the built in search function. However I found a site with which you can search, export to .nzb file and then import that file into grabit and that worked great for me. I did find out it takes about 1-2 days before those new fresh files got updated onto the IS server, but that was ok for me.

Ja, well, you should have been on the SAIX backbone when the 'undersea link' between Rosebank and New York went down because of a landslide in 'Mumbai'. The outage lasted nearly twenty hours, and that was the worst of a few. Over the last two months the total overseas outages must equal two or three days.
