With my IS uncapped account being virtually useless due to it being so slow I've been keeping an eye on some things and it seems rather odd.

If I turn my router off and turn it on again I sometimes see bandwidth usage like in the screenshot I've attached, at first it goes at the speed I'm paying for then suddenly slows back down, it doesn't always happen, sometimes it's slow from the start. Looks as if it's suddenly being limited.

Though if that didn't seem strange enough, I kept an eye on the speed of my download while doing an international speed test, and quite consistently my download speeds up while doing this speed test (almost as if some limit is being removed while the speed test is going) it's speed increases between 3x to 5x faster if not more sometimes.

This seems very strange to me.

Edit,

Just kept an eye on my download while trying a different international speed test and again my download started going faster until the test completed.

Agree - it is slow

I too am experiencing frustration with very slow speeds
I pay for DSL up to 512kbps and can get front pages of google searches but cannot get into any of the websites - in fact having to use 3G card to connect.
I live in Fish Hoek, Cape Town

Browser, like I mentioned earlier in one of you earlier posts, IS are busy doing upgrades.

Yes but how would that explain these things? Any idea how long these upgrades will take to complete Alchemist?

Mine has been darn slow since this weekend too. Seems to have become worse today. I also notice sudden speed ups from time to time.

Yes, speedups here too, from 0.0Kb to sometimes (rarely) 7Kb for a very short moment.

Current speed at 2.3k, 1.4k, 2.0k, 4.1k, 4.5k, 1.4k you get the picture, the average is probably under 3Kb.

Browser, IS are hoping to have every thing completed by mid November. However, we should start seeing vast improvements sooner than that

By mid-November!? I would certainly not expect them to think that the current performance is at all acceptable to its users - for a certain window (say, 24h) is fine, but for over a week?! Even IS can't be THAT "crap"! Granted, SAIX is MUCH better (latency, reliability and ability to 'max out' connection speed), but I have been on an IS Uncapped Express account and been reasonably happy with it (have done about 40GB since 18 October)...

you are the chosen one. everyone else sulks.

Yeah this is pathetic, hopefully things change soon, well Uncapped saix comming which hopefully is free or reallly cheap

Guy's there is no uncapped SAIX coming, they will charge you more the more you use, which is how it is now. Telkom is twisting the ADSL regulations, they are claiming it as uncapped because they won't cut you off if you download over your cap, they'll just charge you more.

No uncapped coming from SAIX/Telkom.

once again, u r confusing 2 different concepts. free local and uncapped local are 2 different stuff dude!

SAIX just dropped their International uncapped so no they wont be offering uncapped and I moved to a SAIX account from IS because international was always down or slow or useless and for R2500 a month I expect a connection that acually works. Anyway 30GB on SAIX is about R1500 and i can topup if I run out.

don't you people read

gosh. i feel like i'm talking to schoolkids.

Well mercurial it shows alot about to you to insult people without even considering what they're saying, you're acting like a teenager. I've read that news, and if you had read other news you would know what it means. It does not mean there will be any uncapped SAIX at a fixed rate per month, and it sure as hell doesn't mean there will be free local traffic.

"local bandwidth shall not be subject to the cap" they will not cap you, they will just be charging you according to how much you use, the more you use the more you pay. That is not uncapped (unlimited at a fixed rate over a period of time) infact it's hardly different to how it's always been.

uncapped means they don't cut u off. what about this do u still not understand? gosh. it's got nothing to do with how much u pay. don't confuse the 2.
