Just got off the phone with justin and the guy was very helpfull,im thinking of and probably will sign up for a 24 month contract.that do broadband 1Gig for R199 with a free router. The only thing thats bugging me is the way people always complain about telkom!so are they really that bad?anybody using them and who are happy with them?

Everyone uses Telkom lol.... something about the monopoly.. since Neotel ain't really here yet. :)

Go Telkom, DoBroadband 1 is fine, just dont sign a 24 month contract, buy a router for like R400.

Note:

Cybersmart is still cheaper for the same usage.

The actual service is not bad at all! Its the after sales service that sucks!

NO CONTRACT - You will be sorry.
2 years is long time.

You will seriously regret signing a 24 month contract with them. With Neotel launching and other companies starting interesting price wars that last thing you want to do is get stuck in a 24 month contract!! Trust us!!

Telkom is fine as long as there are no problems. The moment there is a problem, the helpline is congested - as in hours of holding time.

You could get similar offers from eg webafrica.co.za - and I've never had to hold more than 5 minutes - my cut off point for good or non-existant service levels.

It's usually a problem with the ADSL line anyway... Even if you pay your line rental to another ISP, it's them who then has to beg Telkom to fix it.

thanksp for the advice guys. i have read mrg's thread and at first i thaught that webafrica was the best way to go but i dont really have the money now for a router.my manager suggested mweb but thats also contract and slightly more expensive than telkom. so i think i will take your advice and rent the adsl line from telkom and use webafrica for prepaid every month. now i just need to get R800 for a good router

There's nothing wrong with their internet, try one of their Do packages, just no contract...

Look at Nashua.... http://www.internet-lessness.co.za/info.aspx?ID=178&Page=1&Product=178 Click on pricing. I use it as my first account and have a second DoBroadband 2 as a top up! The 2Gb on special offer has a free billion wifi router with it

so can i use telkom internet without signing a 24 month contract?the guy i spoke with kind of made it seem like that was the only option available.

I have a one month notice period. 24 month contract with them is only if you want the "free" router

Read here : Section H Termination

What they DO offer is always working for me. Other than their customer support and prices, id say they are just fine :).

Seriously though. I have had it for about 2 years and only about 4 times have i ever had problems with the internet being down, and after about 30min it was sorted anyway.

The free router seems nice but not worth a 24 month contract.
im stil abit of a noob and wondering if you get cut off after you have used up the 1Gig cap, because in mrg's thread he said you get double the bandwidth with the 2Gig and 3Gig acounts.

Contracts, at this time, is not a good idea.

If you've got a good router, then you'll be able to use same router for a long, long time :)

Or you can ask around whether somebody's got a 2nd hand router they want to get rid of... ;)

I would not sign for a 24 month contract but as stated I happily signed up for 12 months with Nashua as I got a Billion 7300G wifi router included for the cost. Even without the free router, the R139 per month includes the ADSL line rental which is usually R152 with Telkom directly. So a bargain even if you ignore the 2Gbs of data. Even if something better comes along in the next year (well 10 months now) I will only be R139 out of pocket ( and even this is pushing it as I still have my line and my 2Gb data and my wifi router). So can't see how I will lose really.

A lot of people seem to immediately be turned off when they hear the word contract. I personally prefer to weigh up the pros before making that call.

As regards the data, Nashua I think will stop your access when you reach 2Gbs but as stated in my case I have not had this happen as abuse my Telkom account and save my Nashua for emergency access. The Telkom account I have got anything between 3.5 and 4.2Gbs of data on my 2Gb account before getting cut off. It then reverts to the 20Gb local only data. This is when I then use my Nashua account via RouteSentry.

telkom caps

to answer that question cashmoney with the Telkom packages once you reach the cap you get cut off if you do'nt you recieve a big Bill for extra usage

Further to this info cashmoney....

After having a look at the Telkom website the 1Gb package does not include the collective threshold and you are cut off straight away. You then go into your local only access and with the 1Gb account this is only 10Gb and not 20Gb like with the 2gb account.

Please ensure your information is correct before trying to provide assistance.... see my post for what happens in reality.

What you may be referring to is Telkom charging you if you use more than your allocated local access after you have used your international cap. With the 2Gb account you get 20Gb local, go over this and get charged +-R25 per Gig (local only)

# Cap period ~ Capping is determined over a given period, normally a calendar month. As such, monthly usage is accumulated during the period and reset according to your service subscription. At the beginning of each period the usage tracker is reset and any restrictions that might have been imposed would be lifted.

# What is a cap ~ A cap is the amount of traffic or Gigs per service a subscriber may use or consume over a given period, and is determined by the product you have subscribed to initially. An example would be 2, 3 or 4 Gig. Capping has no relation to the ADSL speed that you have chosen.

# When your shared service cap is reached~ As a TelkomInternet subscriber you have access to our unique threshold management service. This service operates as follows: should you exceed your initial individual service threshold, 1GB, 2 GB, 3 GB or 4 GB service, you will automatically be transferred into our collective threshold option. This will enable you to stay online until such time that the average usage for all our subscribers reaches the collective service threshold. The 1 GB service has no collective threshold however will allow restrictive access once capped.

# NEW capping policy w.e.f 1 February 2008 ~ Once your service threshold and collective threshold have been exceeded, you will be placed within your allocated Local Only bandwidth which is on promotion. As you will not be capped on local bandwidth, we reserve the right to bill you for anything exceeding the allocated local bandwidth that is on promotion. The charge for local bandwidth is R25,55 per gig. If you desire international surfing you can top-up your current username with additional blended bandwidth.
