Can I still get a discount when I take a line and one of the bigger packages, like I do when I take a Do3 package? Even without that discount, it's cheaper to take a 16 Gig + 8 Gig package = 24Gigs (R 388) than to take a 20 Gig package (R 440). What is the local cap on these packages? Still 30 Gigs?

I don't think grav80's "fireworks and champagne" prediction will come to much, but Telkom will probably fix some of the discrepancies, to get all their pricing to "fit a curve".

Off Topic: RPM, isn't it an idea to differentiate between Telkom Internet and Telkom in your articles? It might stop the "384k is too slow" comments which really don't belong in a thread about Telkom the ISP.

Every time I read one of these stories I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Here is Telkom, our only fixed line operator, doling out a few lousy gigs here and there like a miser, and expects us to tug our forelocks and be grateful. On top of that they charge grossly inflated prices and then tell us they know what's good for us, treating us like naughty children. When all the time their mandate should be to provide basic, usable speed broadband that is affordable to the masses, as well as high-speed access that is affordable to the middle classes. And no more data allocations, when the information flowing through the pipes is fraction of the total cost there will be no need.

Now people might say, yes but... We have the technical skills, we have the know-how, and if they could find money to build the SWC stadiums they can find money for universal access. The one big difference between us and the rest of the world that has affordable, high-speed Internet, is the massive corruption endemic in government and current/former state institutions. If the political will had existed we could have achieved this long ago. Corruption is going to be the end of this country.

40GB for R810 is spectacularly mediocre. It all went pear shaped when this retarded per-GB billing started, are there any other countries in the world that also have this ?

10GB on 3G for R200 p/m is more like it, why can't telkom sa give the same kind of real specials on ADSL access ?

TelkomInternet has recently informed their subscribers that “Due to our constant quest to improve Telkom Internet’s services, we will be executing system maintenance. Regrettably, customers will not be able to access the Data Usage and Top Up–portals”.

This maintenance, which took place last night, may well have something to do with Telkom’s new data bundles.

Was a maintenance notification sent out in July for the temporary increased caps? No.

I think this hypothesis is wrong.

IMHO, in the case of Telkom, it is not necessarily corruption (Telkom does take corruption seriously, procurement processes are quite stringent), but rather BEE tax (the difficulty in procuring any services from any company without local presence and BEE credentials, resulting in having to procure via a third party which is and has, and wants their cut). So, while the result is the same (higher costs, people taking money that shouldn't need to be wasted), it is legal and enforced by the government.

Well, maybe not only corruption, but the burden on the taxpayer, who has kept paying about the same income tax, but who has more and more expenses (toll fees, increased rates, national health insurance costs on top of medical aid) that fund services that used to be funded by taxes (so, one does wonder where our taxes go, if they don't do what they used to, and a good portion of that could be to corruption).
