Is the router you get from Mweb locked to them?

Sure I read that it is somewhere.

I already have my own nice router from Telkom (? Yes that's correct), but I know someone who I think is going to make the mistake of taking out a contract with Mweb for the whole free router thing, mainly 'cos they are on Mweb dial-up and want to keep their e-mail address the same.

So I just wanted to inform them of this, and dissuade them from an Mweb contract if it's true.
 
Mr Paperclip. He is your friend! When in need, insert him into the reset button of thy mweb router whilst turned on.

Edit: When things turn sour, quote dodgy advice from a internet forum to the telephone consultant

Yes, the router's are locked... but I would assume they can be flashed with new firmware. Never done it one of those though... but I have flashed plenty of other routers.

Mweb does have its good points. The tech support is pretty good, the stability of their network and options for the future are selling points. Yes, they are expensive, but you get what you pay for. Plus, you get all the local access for free!

I would inform them of the bad points... and for Pete's sake convince them to go with gmail (they can still use their old mweb address along with gmail).

But for non-techie people... mweb is not a bad option. Just be aware, when you sign up, that they have an option enabled to purchase more bandwidth (pay per Meg). They should turn that option off as soon as possible.

I wouldn't have thought that would unlock the router (paperclip), flashing with new firmware probably. But thought in that case they wouldn't want to fix/replace it if it broke.

Also I was aware of their 20c per Mb thing.

AFAIK there is no contract - hence the free router is network locked.
 
AFAIK you can only get the free router on 24 month contract, and the month to month accounts do not come with a router.
