Im looking for a device that will convert the sound coming out my plasma TV to 5.1 sound. The PC and DSTV is connected to it. I can add 5.1 speaker system to the PC and then the movies playing out the PC will play in 5.1 sound, how do i get the DSTv to play in 5.1? without having to use an amp.

You need something to decode the 5.1 signal. That will probably be a receiver... some of the cheap (R1000) PC speakers have a little sound processor that can take in a digital feed.

It depends what kind of signal is coming out of your TV. And obviously, the signal has to contain 5.1 channels of information.

Um.

Before you go out and buy an amp - how are you getting the sound of your plasma?
Or will do you digital out direct from DSTV and other sources?

As was said earlier, it needs to contain the information ... and unless you have have co-axial/optical/HDMI out of the TV, direct is the only way.

If I understand correctly, your setup is as follows :

PC(Video) -> TV - HDMI(I assume)
PC(Audio) -> PC 5.1 Speakers (Via your sound card)
DSTV(Video) -> TV - HDMI/Composite

If so, then all you need is a digital audio input on your pc, the dstv optical out will go to the PC and get decoded by the sound card and played out on the 5.1 PC Speakers
