A friend is in a bit of a financial bother so for a quick cash injection, he offered to sell me his golf 5 gti (DSG) what that means ( i know nothing about golf) for 90k. His initial asking price was 120k but i wasn't dropping that much on a car i don't like. Im buying this only because its him and he needs the money tomorrow cash . I should mention that the mileage is 142000 or around that mark.

So is this a bargain or am i throwing money away?

Does it still have a motor plan?

The DSG is the paddle shift gearbox aka Automatic, and those boxes if they break is around R 40k to repair/replace
 
R90k is cheap but @ 142000KM maintenance plan is long gone its going to get increasingly expensive to fix and service. If you can afford probably R30k per year on maintenance go for it.

Cant you get an extended motor plan service from VW for a few more years?
 
you can i think extend the motor plan but dont listen to everyone that is a big big bargain

if i were you buy it and sell it next week for around 120k ...quick money

my friend bought a g5 gti as well with around 150k on the clock for around 135k
 
I don't want this coming back to bite me in the @zz. 30k on maintenance is a bit steep hey. Thing is i know the owner well and the car is not even 1.5 years old. Excessive driving chasing tender brief meetings from cape town to joburg.

Tenders didn't work out and now in a fix....im struggling to justify the outlay if its gonna cost me 30k a year to keep on the road.

And this flip flap dsg gizmo is worrying me, anybody know how durable they are?

Help me decide please
 
the gearbox is good but if breaks going to cost alot and same with the turbo

thats why best bet is to buy the car and sell it and then use same money to buy a better one if you do want a gti ...you will get quick money

Buy it, help your friend out of his fix and sell it. You have the time I assume to let it sell where as he doesn't. Drive it while you're trying to sell it. It will be insured so if you do write it off you still make a profit :p

The padles are sturdy as hell. The problem is with the gearbox itself in some models. But it doesn't mean this one will break.
 
Check the value of these cars online and see if you can make a profit by buying it and immediately selling it again ;)

A gti still sells for around 150k ....

on car find with searching for g5 gti with 100k-150k mileage a 05 dsg with 147k going for 175k

these cars hold value no matter what

IMHO, buy it and drive it until it dies.

You are getting a hot hatch at a bargain price. The DSG gearbox very rarely breaks, and even if it does, by now even the indies should be able to fix it.

Take out one of those Hollard Motor-Xtender on a month-to-month basis to cover big mechanical failures and you are set.

Thanks for the advice guys, money drawn....waiting for the car to arrive and then take it for a spin....hope i don't crash:)

In that case I would buy it and flog it for a nice profit ;)

Before you hand over the cash, make sure you receive all the paperwork as well as an affidavit where your friend states the full accident history of the car. Anything from potholes to bumper replacements.

If the car has been in accidents it will affect your resale value immensely.
