Is this a good network switch?

Hi all, I would like to know if the Dlink DES-1016D is a good switch, I can get it online for R580 which is a good price but im not sure if that model is good. The same switch goes for R1500 in the US, is the R580 a typo?

I see, I also have a few more questions.

1. If my router is acting as a DHCP server how will the switch function?
2. Does it have a built in fan?

1. A switch will have no impact on your DHCP server.
2. The ones we have don't.

Just remember we don't have that exact model, we have that range but the gigabit models. There may be differences (besides speed).
 
Is this for home use?

That's a lot of money if it is.

I would just buy a cheap Planet from Scoop. Job done.


And I've never rebooted a switch in my life.

No it's not a good deal, it's 2014. Even facking wireless is faster than that these last few decades. Unless you want it to go with your collection of floppy disks, Nokia 5110's and pieces of the Titanic.

For the same money, you could get something modern.

Well, my router is 100meg so it wouldnt make a difference.

When my brothers friend comes over i have to take the router to the dining room then I must run my 30M network cable to the router.


I was thinking to get the switch for them then run the 30M to the switch so I can have the router.

This router would be overkill then.

I've had this model in my office for about 5 years, just sits there and works.

Currently using 13 ports for a mixture of WAPs and PCs which it handles without problems. Surprised at the price though would have expected this technology to be cheaper, if I was to replace it I'd opt to spend more bucks and go for a gigabit unit.

Word of warning on cheap 8 port switches - they don't like driving long cable lengths so 30m would be pushing it.

If I were you I would then rather get a 8 port gigabit switch. It's far more likely you will end up wanting to copying files from one computer to another before you end up running out of ports. 100Mbps ethernet is painfully slow.
